In the heart of Tuscany’s Maremma, between the blue of the sea and the green of the pine forest, there is a place where sustainability is an integral part of hospitality. This eco-friendly residence, nestled in nature just a few steps from the pristine beach of the Maremma Natural Park, is an example of virtuous hospitality that highlights the local area and promotes a deep connection with nature. Thanks to the dedication of its owners, Residence Mareblù was recently nominated for the Ecobnb Awards, which recognize the most sustainable and virtuous accommodations in Italy.
We interviewed Lucia from Mareblù to gain an inside look at their philosophy and the sustainability initiatives that make this residence an ideal choice for eco-tourism enthusiasts.
What was the spark that ignited your passion for environmental sustainability?
Our passion for nature has always defined us, perhaps because we were born and raised in a particularly beautiful and wild environment that is a part of us. My husband, who is also the company’s manager, has a degree in Environmental Economics and has worked for several years with public administrations on ISO and EMAS certifications.
We have four children, and we want to leave them a clean and beautiful world to live in. It felt natural for us to bring this mindset into the property by choosing the path of sustainability.
What aspects do you consider fundamental in your sustainability journey?
The pillars of our eco-sustainable actions are:
Limiting the consumption of resources (energy, water).
Value small local quality producers.
Limit the generation of waste, especially plastic.
Involve guests in our project to make them aware.
How would you describe your ideal “eco-traveler” host?
Our ideal guest is a person who wants to live his holiday fully and consciously, respecting the local community and the territory, trying to take advantage of all the opportunities for beauty that can find.
A person who prefers alternative means of transport to the car, often travels with pets and enjoys having a chat to know where he is staying.
What is the most significant review you have received and what made it special?
“A lovely retreat with true hospitality and attention to every detail.”
We were very pleased that this guest, who stayed only a few days, appreciated our efforts in the search for high quality organic and local products and all other measures of sustainability.
Let’s debunk the myth that eco-sustainability is necessarily more expensive. Do you think ‘Eco-friendly’ can also be ‘Economical’
Certainly, an initial investment is required to change the way we work and we are, in some respects, still at this stage. But over time the savings will be evident, especially if guests feel involved and motivated to work with us. For example, we have been producing domestic hot water with solar systems for 25 years now and the savings are undeniable.
Which green initiatives have given you the greatest satisfaction? What have been the most appreciated by your guests?
This year we have eliminated the sale of plastic water bottles in our bar, replacing them with a water dispenser. Although it was a paid service, it was very successful, and more than half of the guests used it willingly.
We have also adopted more effective communication to limit towel change by providing good quality sponges that can last several days. This approach is paying off and has raised awareness among many guests about the importance of reducing waste.
How do the values and projects of Ecobnb resonate with those of your structure?
Ecobnb proposes a way of traveling and living that corresponds to ours, as people and as hoteliers, and for us, it makes no difference. We pay attention to guests as people with their own characteristics and needs, and the local community. The advice and articles on Ecobnb’s blog are interesting and can give you some food for thought.
