Eco-Hospitality in the Heart of Trapani: The Green Vision of Kantunè B&B

In this interview, Salvatore shares the story of how Kantunè Bed & Breakfast came to be and how it has become a symbol of eco-sustainability, earning a nomination at the Ecobnb Awards. It’s a corner of Sicily where every action is designed to leave a positive impact on both guests and the environment.

Salvatore, tell us about the spark that ignited your passion for environmental sustainability.

The spark for environmental sustainability was born from the desire to one day leave our children a cleaner and less polluted planet than the one we inherited. We believe that good examples and best practices are essential to inspire lasting change. I like to imagine a zero-pollution world, where humanity lives in harmony with nature.

What are the pillars of your eco-sustainability journey?

Our philosophy is based on a few fundamental principles: reducing waste production, eliminating single-use plastics, recycling, and recovering resources. We strive to avoid waste, particularly food waste, and have implemented solutions to reduce water and energy consumption, such as solar panels for hot water and flow reducers. Every daily action is designed to have a positive impact on the environment.

How would you describe your ideal “eco-traveler” guest

The ideal eco-traveler is someone who is mindful and conscious. They arrive by public transport or electric car, get around on foot or by bike, and pay attention to small yet significant details: taking quick showers, using air conditioning only when necessary, and respecting recycling instructions.

What has been the most meaningful review you’ve received?

The most meaningful reviews are not tied to a single comment but to the people behind them. Every review reminds us of faces, stories, and special connections with our guests. It’s a privilege to know that our efforts are appreciated and that we help make their trips memorable.

Let’s debunk a myth: Is “eco-friendly” always more expensive? What’s your take?

It’s quite the opposite. Adopting sustainable solutions often turns out to be cost-saving. For example, using solar panels reduces gas costs, while LED light bulbs lower electricity consumption. Additionally, offering linen changes on request has decreased water and energy usage. Buying local, zero-kilometer products not only benefits the environment but also supports the local economy and provides superior quality.

What advice would you give to other establishments looking to embark on a sustainable path?

A practical tip? Track the economic benefits of sustainable choices, like towel changes on request—the results can be surprising! Also, focus on offering local products for breakfast, which not only reduce environmental impact but also win over guests with their flavor.

Which green initiatives have brought you the greatest satisfaction?

We are particularly proud of eliminating single-use plastics and adopting refillable dispensers for bathroom products.

Which initiatives are most appreciated by your guests?

Without a doubt, the zero-kilometer food and towel changes on request are among the favorites. Guests also value our attention to detail and our commitment to reducing waste.

How do Ecobnb’s values align with those of your establishment?

We feel proudly part of the Ecobnb community and fully share its values. We believe sustainability is a journey to be built together, combining efforts to leave a better world for future generations.
