Alpe-Adria: From the Heart of the Alps to the Sea

Named Cycling Route of the Year in 2015, Alpe-Adria connects Salzburg, the city of Mozart, to the Adriatic, passing through the heart of Carinthia. Along the way, each stop brings new landscapes, cultures and flavors.

The route winds through the majestic mountains of the NationalPark Hohe Tauern , reaching Spittal an der Drau. This charming town is home to Porcia Castle, one of the finest Renaissance palaces north of the Alps. It then continues toward Villach along the Italian-Austrian border and descends into the Friulian plains to the sea.

A 162 km route through the sunniest part of the region, blending nature and culture. Via Carinzia begins in the idyllic Rosental valley and winds its way to the Klopeiner See, before crossing the hills of the Lavanttal.

Along the way, you’ll encounter many cultural highlights, including the magnificent Benedictine abbey of St. Paul and the Liaunig Museum, one of Austria’s most important contemporary art collections.

If you’re an art lover, don’t miss the Kunstradweg in Bleiburg. This cycling path combines natural scenery and art, passing by ancient churches and cultural landmarks such as the Werner Berg Museum.

When: The cycling season runs from May to October. Summer brings mild temperatures and long days, perfect for riding; June and September are ideal if you prefer to avoid the crowds.

Bike rental: If the climbs seem too tiring, don’t worry! There’s an extensive network of rental outlets and charging stations for electric bikes.
