Dormouse House is a historic stone holiday house in which you'll sleep like a rock! It is authentic two centuries old historic farmhouse in the Slovenian countryside, only 60 km from Ljubljana, on a hill with a spectacular view over Lake Cerknica.
Have you ever dreamt of waking up in a charming historic house which feels like you have travelled two centuries back in time? In May 2019 we have finished the renovation of an old historic farmhouse in the Slovenian countryside. The Dormouse House is now ready to host up to 5 guests who are searching for a quiet countryside retreat.
The Dormouse House is situated in a small village of Goričice, only 60 kilometres from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The village is nestled on a hill with a spectacular view over Lake Cerknica, the largest Slovenian wetland. When you open windows on a summer evening, you will hear a concert of birds, frogs and insects from the valley. There are no street lights in the village and you on clear nights you can see thousands of stars above the house.
The house which dates back from the 18th century is maintaining many original features. It is one of the last houses in the wide region with a thatched roof. With carefully selected old furniture it still retains the charm of an old house but is equipped to provide all modern conveniences. The house is entirely built of stone, and the thick stone walls give it a special, quiet atmosphere.
Form the Dormouse House you can enjoy lovely walks to Lake Cerknica, nearby forests or visit some of the karst caves. Southern Slovenia also offers a great base for day-trips to any part of Slovenia. From our holiday house, you can reach both the Slovenian seaside and the famous Lake Bled in a bit more than an hour drive.
Through the ancient wooden door, you enter a large hall with a high arched ceiling. The heart of the house is a great room with a large tiled stove and a dining corner. This room contains two twin beds. A wooden beamed ceiling bearing the year 1791 gives this room a special atmosphere. In the smaller room next door, there are three single beds (of which one is only 1,75 cm long). As this is a self-catering accommodation, there is a fully equipped kitchen. This has been set up in a room which has historically been used as a kitchen. However, in the past, most foods were prepared on an open fireplace and the sooth has made walls around entirely black. No worries, part of the "black kitchen" has been modernised and you will be able to cook on an induction hob. A later addition a house is also a small bathroom.
Eco-friendly hosts of the Dormouse House Jana and Paul are running a non-profit company Nature in colour which is working on nature conservation and ecotourism. The profits we create through ecotourism are invested in conservation activities and maintenance of the house. We are both naturalist guides and offer various day-trips to nature areas
