We are a small family of Réunion, French, and Canadian descent, and a few years ago we decided to settle down after living and traveling in many countries around the world.
Our certified organic farm is located in central Portugal, in a very rural region rich in history and traditions, near a charming little village once inhabited by the Romans. We built our passive, solar-powered house ourselves, using wood and straw, to enjoy cool summers and mild winters.
The land, set apart from the village and nestled among olive groves, borders a babbling brook. The tranquility is occasionally broken by a tractor passing in the distance or the bleating of flocks of sheep on a stroll. Numerous wild trails surround the farm, promising hours of hiking. The river, where you can swim in its cool water, is accessible via a short path (a 5-minute walk). On the terrace, the night sky reveals its Milky Way and stars, each brighter than the last! In the early morning, you might be gently awakened by birdsong in the ash trees, while our rooster, kept away from the house, won't disturb you.
We have 1 hectare of vineyards and 250 olive trees: we make our own grape juice and olive oil, and the diversity of our vegetable garden feeds us year-round. We practice the principles of permaculture and biodynamic farming. Our orchard also provides us with delicious fruit: apples, pears, figs, cherries, peaches, raspberries, currants, chestnuts... Every year we plant trees, trees, and more trees!
The room has a double bed, a desk area, and a small single mattress can be added.
You can participate in the daily activities of the farm: milking our goat Amarela and our sheep Stella, making cheese, training our horses using natural methods, collecting eggs from our hens, tending and harvesting vegetables in the garden or medicinal plants in our mandala garden, making preserves or medicinal products...
We are also therapists: Laetitia is a herbalist, trainer, author of "The Other Pharmacy," and hypnotherapist. Yannick is a massage therapist, shiatsu practitioner, and Reiki master. You will also meet our daughter, a lively young student who loves to cook and chat with visitors.
We are generous in sharing our knowledge, travel stories, and the reasons behind our lifestyle choices: respect for the environment and biodiversity, food and energy self-sufficiency, and alternative health practices.
We offer the possibility of adding delicious organic and vegetarian meals made from farm ingredients to your stay, as well as consultations in shiatsu, reiki, naturopathy, herbalism, hypnotherapy. It is also possible to book "Discovering the Horse and its Relationship with Humans" sessions, as well as a 90-minute educational tour of the farm.
Consultations, sessions, and tours range from €25 to €65, depending on the type and duration of the session.
Breakfast is €4 per person, and lunch and dinner are €8 per person.
You have access to a large communal lounge with a wood-burning stove, a large kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower. We often host volunteers, so meals are usually hearty, warm, and convivial!
We are located 2 hours from Porto; we are close to the Serra da Estrela National Park, as well as numerous medieval villages and the prehistoric site of Foz Cóa. There are several rivers in the area suitable for swimming. Throughout the summer, the locals come alive with village festivals and celebrations: an opportunity to discover local traditions and Portuguese artists of all kinds. !
Note:
- Our farm is accessible via a 1 km dirt track (suitable for any "normal" car, except for sports cars with very low floor).
- If you prefer to come by public transport, that's possible! There's a bus station in Trancoso and a train station in Vila Franca das Naves, both 15 minutes from our place. A taxi ride costs €20. If no taxi is available, we can also arrange this service (please contact us privately).
- We provide organic and biodegradable soap and shampoo. Please do not bring "conventional" or non-organic cosmetics (toothpaste, sunscreen, etc.), as our greywater is treated using a constructed wetland system.
- Our toilets are dry and composting.
- There is no Wi-Fi access and no television in the rooms or common areas. You can either take advantage of this time to do your "digital detox" or use your own device. Phone plan. Alternatively, free Wi-Fi is available in the village (3 minutes by car, 10 minutes on foot). You can also buy a local data SIM card for approximately €10.
- It gets quite cold in the region during the winter, but we also have a small wood-burning stove in the rooms.
