Kantunè

Via Aperta 21 - 91100 Trapani - Province of Trapani - Italy

We do not inherit the land from our fathers, we borrow it from our children.

Kantunè remembers the corner of the Sicilian street. A road ends and another begins. A place of passage, a meeting place and a resting place.
A name that recalls an ancient word, the cantunera, and that sinks the etymology into the Greek language and through the Spaniards and our grandparents reaches us.
But the story of Kantunè is a bit more modern, perhaps.
Let's take a step back and reconstruct the facts by telling how things went.
Kantunera is located in the heart of the historic center of Trapani in the so-called Mezzo district, right at the end of the Jureca, the Jewish quarter from Giudecca a few steps from Palazzo Ciambra, and behind the Catito and Holy Father district that together formed the "ghetto" of Trapani. A few steps from the port, a few steps from the beach.
Not far away is the Casalicchio district, the oldest in the city where Arabs and corallai lived, along with fishermen and sailors.
These people together with the wives, salt workers, network repairers, putriks and other traders often entertained themselves in the cantunera in a swarm of typical Sicilian life in the 50s, where mules and carts still passed and the cats were meowing in front of a votive shrine.
Kantunè is located in Via Aperta, a rather unusual toponym for the street of an historic center. A name actually recent.
In fact, the building is reborn shortly after the end of the Second World War on the ruins of old 18th century tanks.
The Mezzo district had been heavily bombed and the buildings had been so damaged that they had to be demolished.
Land and ruins are purchased by the Tortorici family who soon rebuilds several buildings following the post-war building dictates by opening a passage way, the Via Aperta precisely, in order to connect via Todaro to via Badiella and Magistrale.
From this moment a swarm of people pass daily in front of what would have become our home. A public that is so numerous that it pushes the industrious traders from Trapani to open a place in the warehouses on the ground floor. Home and putìa precisely.
The commercial activity lasts several decades until just before the birth of our bed & breakfast.
Today high school students and professionals, tourists and patrons of the nearby taverns and bars stop and meet here in a teeming with life that contributes to nourishing the spirit of Kantunè, which culminates with the numerous crowds of Good Friday during the procession of the Mysteries.

EcoFriendly
We at Kantunè want to leave a better world to those who will come after us than we have inherited. This is why we are committed to implementing simple procedures that allow us to respect our planet.

We use low consumption LED bulbs and we suggest keeping a room temperature of around 22 ° C.
We use flow reducers to reduce water consumption.
We don't like waste and we don't like to produce excess waste. We use bath products in convenient rechargeable dispensers.
We change the sheets and linen regularly every three days because we consider it a daily damage.
We suggest our guests to travel by public transport, on foot or by bicycle, and we like to promote separate waste collection.
