OVERLOOKING THE ETNA AND THE SEA, THE "HOUSE OF STRAWFUL GARDEN. PERMACULTURE ON ETNA" IS AN IDEAL FAMILY-RUNNING REALITY FOR THOSE WHO SEEK SIMPLE HOSPITALITY, IN A NATURAL AND SILENT ENVIRONMENT.
The Felcerossa Straw House is located on the eastern slope of Mount Etna at about 900 meters above sea level, very close to the most beautiful circuits of the "mountain". We decided to live here for the tranquility, the extraordinary view of Mount Etna and the sea, the desire to become self-sufficient, to experiment and apply the principles of permaculture and green building. You have the opportunity to taste seasonal fruit, vegetables, spontaneous and aromatic plants, the eggs of our hens, any processed products (dried fruit, jams, Modica chocolate, etc.). Our project, in addition to the improvement of the land conducted in Permaculture and the hospitality of travelers in a simple and family atmosphere, and at low cost, provides for the realization of courses and cultural events (for more information on the type of activities proposed, visit our website casadipagliafelcerossa.it).
Guests can stay in two houses in lava stone (typical construction of the area) largely renovated in green building (such as clay plasters) and soberly furnished; many of the renovations were carried out looking for simple but functional solutions. The houses are very cool and shady, ideal for families or a group of friends since they are unique environments on different levels. Each house is absolutely independent and reserved, relatively close to our home for any need. The houses are equipped with everything necessary for the kitchen, ecological detergents and natural soaps, toilet paper, sheets and towels. We propose to avoid the use of plastic plates and glasses and to separate waste. Each house provides for the collection and reuse of rainwater. Electricity is produced by a photovoltaic panel system. A cottage is available only in the summer period; the other is equipped with a very efficient pellet stove for the winter period. Internet is available at our house (we are working to make it available also in the two houses). The car can be parked on the ground.
We are part of the Sicily Permaculture Network and look forward to increasingly achieving a sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystem. At the moment we are working to improve the soil, to design a Food Forest, to produce aromatic and medicinal plants, vegetables and fruit for family consumption according to a natural management of the land, to the realization of a phyto-purification plant; we have solar and photovoltaic panels and all homes are equipped with rainwater collection tanks. For children there is a trampoline, a square with a basketball basket, a small playground made with recycled materials.
Guests will have the opportunity to visit our house in straw bales, built entirely according to green building criteria, and to exchange information on permaculture; they will be able to harvest seasonal fruit, try the eggs from our hens if they wish. We are available to advise you on Etna excursions of different levels of difficulty, other permacultural, social, fair trade, and anti-mafia commitment according to the principles of responsible tourism, local restaurants, guides or associations for specific excursions (eg . by bike...).
Our location is also an excellent starting point for the sea, the Alcantara river park, the Milo adventure park, the cities of Taormina, Modica, Noto, Syracuse ...

Volevamo ringraziare i proprietari della casa di paglia per l’ospitalità.
Tiziana ci ha accolti con il sorriso facendoci sentire come a casa. La nostra casetta era dotata di tutto il necessario per il soggiorno. Abbiamo preferito preparare i pasti e gustarli in casetta per godere a pieno della meraviglia del posto.
Da qui ti sembra di accarezzare l’Etna e le stelle.

Siamo molto grati a Tiziana e Toti per aver reso il nostro soggiorno sull'Etna veramente speciale. La casetta in pietra lavica a nostra disposizione è stata perfetta: accogliente, fresca e circondata dal verde. I bambini hanno amato molto dormire sul soppalco in legno e giocare nel frutteto con i gattini. La posizione di Casa di Paglia Felcerossa è adatta a chi vuole godersi una Sicilia ancora autentica, fra due piccoli paesi come Milo e Sant'Alfio, con la splendida vista del mare e dell'Etna fumante insieme, lontano dalla calca dei turisti che trasformano tutto snaturando luoghi e persone. Casa di Paglia Felcerossa è a pochi minuti da splendide passeggiate sul vulcano e fra boschi millenari, a mezzora dalle spiagge di Marina di Cottone e della Riserva di Fiumefreddo, dove l'acqua è cristallina e le spiagge garantiscono una distanza umana fra i bagnanti anche nel fine settimana o a Ferragosto.
Oltre ai luoghi dell'incantevole isola che abbiamo da poco lasciato, un pensiero speciale va a Toti e Tiziana: gentilissimi e prodighi di saggi consigli su posti da visitare o passeggiate incantevoli sul vulcano da fare in famiglia. Durante il nostro soggiorno, ci siamo sentiti come a casa, sempre accolti con un sorriso, con una marmellata appena fatta, i frutti maturi degli alberi che popolano il frutteto-giardino, erbe aromatiche a volontà, uova fresche appena prese dal pollaio, pane caldo cotto da Tiziana nel forno in terra cruda, e qualche ortaggio dell'orto. Non potevamo proprio chiedere di meglio e speriamo di tornare sull'Etna che già ci manca! Consiglieremmo a chiunque di soggiornare in questo luogo, purché si amino la natura e i suoi rumori, si voglia stare lontani dalla calca e si desideri assaporare la Sicilia autentica e caratteristica dell'Etna.

Wunderschöne, unglaublich ruhige und erholsame Lage. Das Haus ist mit liebevollen Details ausgestattet und trotz sizilianischer Hitze angenehm kühl geblieben. Rundherum viel Grün und auch für die Kinder viel Platz zum Spielen. Die Gastgeber stehen authentisch hinter ihrer selbstgewählten Lebensweise und waren in jeder Lage sehr hilfreich. Wir haben die Woche hier alle sehr genossen!

Cosy 3 night stay with two kids. The weather wasn't great unfortunately, but we had a lovely time here nonetheless.

We spent a week at Felcerossa with our two children. The house was very comfortable and the surroundings are beautiful. We enjoyed to eat our breakfast outside with a view of mount etna! The hosts are so welcoming and warm, and took time to speak with us and show us around their garden which is developed according to permaculture principles. We found this very inspiring. The place is a great base from which to explore mount etna, and yet the coast is not too far away either. It was very easy to reach from Catania airport.

We had a lovely time with Tiziana and her family, definitely our favorite host during our Italy trip! The houses are full of caring details and we got great advice for local food, grocery shopping and Etna trekking. Was all together an unique and beautiful experience.
