Mater Torre Guaceto
MATER is located in the center of the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve in Puglia in a privileged position between the countryside and the sea. It is focused on forms of sustainable tourism, certified by the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
In the Natural Marine Reserve of Torre Guaceto, an organic company, MATER, which practices Permaculture and Responsible Tourism. The four hectares of land and the farmhouse are surrounded by nature: archaic landscapes with dry stone walls and centuries-old olive groves follow one another to the lagoon ponds, between sand dunes, Mediterranean scrub and pristine sea, in the heart of Alto Salento. We are half an hour from Ostuni, the Itria Valley and Lecce.
Mater is a unique place, in the heart of the Torre Guaceto Natural Marine Reserve, a naturalistic area of national importance and a RAMSAR site, according to the international convention of the same name, a resting place for migratory birds that move from Africa to Northern Europe. The beaches of the Marine Reserve extend for seven kilometers of the coast of Brindisina: characterized by a spectacular landscape of dunes, Mediterranean scrub and lagoon ponds; a turquoise and transparent sea. The beaches are divided into a long and sandy one, Punta Penna Grossa, and smaller and more secluded coves. The beaches are naturalistic oases, one of which is equipped and others are wilder and more uncontaminated, but all have an extraordinary beauty in common; you can get to the beach of Punta Penna Grossa by bicycle, following the numerous cycle paths, you can admire the rural landscape characterized by the presence of thousand-year-old olive trees. Torre Guaceto is a place for those who love nature and are looking for free and quiet beaches in which to relax away from the crowd.
Mater offers unique and eco-sustainable hospitality focused on rural ecotourism. Guests who stay at MATER enjoy the beneficial effects of habitability of the spaces which make the house welcoming and relaxing; The principles of the VASTU discipline were applied in the layout of the rooms, a holistic concept of architecture, where the quality of a place is also defined by the surrounding nature. The recovery of the building took place using a bio-architecture design, paying particular attention to the use of natural materials and traditional construction techniques; it aims at energy self-sufficiency thanks to solar thermal, the photovoltaic and micro-wind system are among our projects. A bioclimatic greenhouse was created with the aim of reducing winter energy consumption and improving internal comfort.
MATER is a passive house, which means that it tries to minimize energy consumption from conventional sources; it uses above all solar energy and makes the most of the recovery of rainwater and practices strict separate waste collection.
The house is located in a privileged position between the countryside and the sea, from the roof of the house you can see the sea. The spaces of the house are arranged around a large and bright living room with kitchenette, lounge and breakfast table.
At guests' disposal there are two double bedrooms with independent entrance, private bathroom, TV, air conditioning, garden view; a splendid apartment for four people composed as follows: living room with fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher, private bathroom, bedroom with sitting area of approximately 25 m2 with double bed and bunk bed.
Available to guests free of charge: bicycles, but they are not perfect, barbecue, a shared outdoor kitchen, fridge, laundry, and private parking.
The house is well equipped, complete with everything to spend a relaxing holiday: the outdoor showers, the swimming pool, the splendid garden, the bicycles to reach the beaches of the Torre Guaceto Marine Reserve in a quarter of an hour. Animals are allowed in specially equipped spaces.
Only organic detergents are used. With the "zero" waste objective we aim to minimize the physical matter entering and exiting the system (closed system). Repair, composting, reuse and recycling are practiced on site, also with the use of specific artisan skills.
Mater has a synergistic vegetable garden, uses only local and typical varieties and species, and focuses on the custody and reintegration of those varieties threatened with extinction by the senseless practice of monoculture. Furthermore, an ALOE VERA plantation was created, taking advantage of a resource already present on site with the aim of spreading the use of this plant with miraculous properties. Bees were introduced to protect the species and maintain the biodiversity of the plants. Since 2023 it has received the CTS certification, European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
The property is about three kilometers from Serranova, whose rural landscape is characterized by the presence of centuries-old olive trees, the plant dates back to the 12th century, today protected by the Park Authority, by the dry stone walls that demarcate the boundaries of the land. The coast near Mater is characterized by uncontaminated nature and important biodiversity, it is in fact one of the Specially Protected Areas of the Mediterranean for the conservation of biodiversity. The most important natural environments of the Reserve are: the coast, the Mediterranean scrub and the wetland. Along the entire coastline of the Reserve, sandy beaches alternate with short stretches of cliffs; the beach of Punta Penna Grossa preserves 10 meter high sand dunes populated by varieties of plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub and welcomes Mediterranean Turtles in its Recovery Centre. Among the animals that frequent the scrub environment we mention the badger, the luscengola and the green lizard. Behind the dune, where the aquifer emerges, the straw dominates unchallenged. The most frequent and showy animals are birds. Some species of birds spend their whole lives in this habitat, such as the bittern, others, such as starlings and swallows, only use it at night to rest. Where the salinity of the water is less high, amphibians and reptiles also live, including the water turtle.
Study groups and tourists are offered, in addition to genuine food and hospitality, the opportunity to know and understand the functioning of a system based on the diversification and harmonious integration of the different activities: productive, residential, educational and cultural. The initiative involves the use of educational paths structured through points of interest.
The routes are built highlighting three main themes:
• “TECHNICAL” through the laboratories and practices carried out in the company:
Permaculture, Synergistic Agriculture, Natural Beekeeping, Green Architecture, Geobiology, Practice of Traditional Construction Techniques (arches, vaults, domes), Earth Constructions.
• “NATURALISTIC” as “nature path” thus highlighting the ecological aspects and natural emergencies;
• “TERRITORIAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL” linked to the cultural and human aspects sedimented in the territory and which characterize the landscape.
The medium-term objective of the MATER project is to host tourists, travelers and students who consciously decide to spend an ecological holiday. Tourists are offered the opportunity to fully integrate with the life of the center even for medium-long periods (a sort of part-time ecovillage).
Mater is associated with WWOOF ( ) a global movement that connects travelers and natural rural projects by promoting educational and cultural experiences based on a non-profit exchange of trust, to contribute to build a sustainable global community.
