Mater Torre Guaceto
MATER: Sea - Agriculture - Tourism - Eco-Rural is located in the center of the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve in a privileged position between the countryside and the sea. It is focused on forms of sustainable tourism.
In the Natural Marine Reserve of Torre Guaceto, a biological company, MATER, which practices Permaculture and Responsible Tourism. The four hectares of land and the farmhouse are surrounded by nature: archaic landscapes with dry stone walls and centuries-old olive groves follow one another to the lagoon ponds, between sand dunes, Mediterranean scrub and pristine sea, in the heart of the Alto Salento. We are half an hour from Ostuni, Valle d'Itria and Lecce.
Mater is a unique place, in the heart of the Natural Marine Reserve of Torre Guaceto, naturalistic area of national importance is RAMSAR site, according to the international convention of the same name, stopping place for migratory birds that move from North Africa to Northern Europe. The beaches of the Marine Reserve extend for seven kilometers of the coast of Brindisina: characterized by a spectacular landscape of dunes, Mediterranean scrub and lagoon ponds; a turquoise and transparent sea. The beaches are distinguished by a long and sandy, Punta Penna Grossa, and smaller and more secluded bays. The beaches are naturalistic oases, one of which is equipped and others more wild and pristine, but all with an extraordinary beauty in common; at the beach of Punta Penna Grossa, you can arrive by bike, along the numerous cycle paths, you can admire the rural landscape characterized by the presence of millennial olive trees. Torre Guaceto is a place for those who love nature and seek free and quiet beaches in which to relax away from the crowd. We are half an hour from Ostuni, Valle d'Itria and Lecce.
Mater offers unique and eco-sustainable hospitality focused on rural ecotourism. Guests staying at MATER enjoy the beneficial effects of habitability of the spaces that make the home cozy and relaxing; in the layout of the rooms the principles of the VASTU discipline have been applied a holistic concept of Architecture, where the quality of a place is also defined by the surrounding nature. The restoration of the building was made using a design in Bioarchitecture paying particular attention in the use of natural materials and traditional construction techniques;
it aims at energy self-sufficiency thanks to solar thermal, the photovoltaic and micro-wind power plants are among our projects. A bioclimatic greenhouse was created with the aim of reducing winter energy consumption and improving indoor comfort.
MATER is a passive house, meaning that it tries to minimize energy consumption from conventional sources; it mainly uses solar energy and makes the most of rainwater recovery and practices a strict separate waste collection.
The house is located in a privileged position between the countryside and the sea, from the roof of the house you can see the sea. The spaces of the house are arranged around a large and bright living room with kitchenette, living room, table for breakfast.
At guests' disposal there are two double rooms with private entrance, private bathroom, TV, air conditioning, garden view; a beautiful apartment for four people as follows: living room with fully equipped kitchen also with dishwasher, private bathroom, bedroom with seating area of about 25 sqm with double bed and bunk bed.
Available to guests for free: bicycles, but they are not perfect, barbecue, a shared outdoor kitchen, fridge, laundry, and a private parking.
The house is well equipped, complete with everything to spend a relaxing holiday: the outdoor showers, the pool-pool, the beautiful garden, the bicycles to reach the beaches of the Marine Reserve of Torre Guaceto, in a quarter of an hour. Pets are allowed in specially equipped spaces.
Only organic detergents are used. The gray waters of the house are conveyed into a phytodepuration plant. With the objective "zero waste" we aim to minimize the physical matter entering and leaving the system (closed system). Repair, composting, reuse and recycling are carried out on site, even with the use of specific craftsmanship skills.
Mater has a synergistic vegetable garden, uses only local and typical varieties and species, and focuses on the storage and reintegration of those varieties threatened with extinction by the senseless practice of monoculture. Furthermore, a plantation of ALOE VERA was carried out, exploiting a resource already present on site with the aim of spreading the use of this plant with miraculous properties.
The property is about three kilometers from Serranova, whose rural landscape is characterized by the presence of ancient olive trees, the plant dates back to the twelfth century, now protected by the Park Authority, from the dry stone walls that mark the boundaries of the land. The coast near Mater is characterized by an uncontaminated nature and an important biodiversity, it is in fact one of the Specially Protected Areas of the Mediterranean for the conservation of Biodiversity. The most important natural environments of the Reserve are: the coast, the Mediterranean scrub and the wetland. Along the entire coastline of the Reserve, sandy beaches alternate with short stretches of cliff; the beach of Punta Penna Grossa preserves 10 meter high sand dunes populated by the variety of plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub and welcomes the Mediterranean Turtles in its Recovery Center. Among the animals that frequent the environment of the bush the rate, the luscengola and the lizard are mentioned. Behind the dune, where the water table emerges, the straw dominates uncontested. The most frequent and striking animals are birds. Some species of birds spend their whole lives in this habitat, like the bittern, others, like the starlings and the swallows, use it only at night to rest. Where the salinity of water is lower, there are also amphibians and reptiles including the tortoise.
In addition to genuine food and hospitality, the study groups and tourists are offered the opportunity to learn and understand the functioning of a system based on diversification and the harmonious integration of the various activities: productive, residential, educational and cultural. The initiative provides for the use of structured educational paths through points of interest.
The routes are built highlighting three main themes:
• "TECHNICAL" through the laboratories and the practices carried out in the company:
Permaculture, Synergistic Agriculture, Natural Beekeeping, Bioarchitecture, Geobilogy, Practice of Traditional Building Techniques (arches, vaults, domes), Constructions in Earth.
• "NATURALISTICO" as "nature path" highlighting the ecological aspects and natural emergencies;
• "ANTHROPOLOGICAL TERRITORIAL" linked to the cultural and human aspects sedimented on the territory and which characterize the landscape.
The medium-term objective of the MATER project is to host tourists, travelers and students who decide, consciously, to spend an ecological holiday. Tourists are offered the opportunity to integrate completely with the life of the center even for medium-long periods (a sort of part-time ecovillage).
Mater is associated with WWOOF ( a global movement that connects travelers and natural rural projects by promoting educational and cultural experiences based on a non-profit exchange of trust, to contribute to build a sustainable global community.
