Mountain Villa is an off-grid eco retreat in Vagamon, Kerala, with four cottages on a five-acre private estate at 3,300 ft in the Western Ghats. Most of the land has been left as natural forest. The rest grows organic vegetables, fruit trees, coffee and cardamom. The estate borders Kurushumala Ashram on one side and looks out across green valleys on the other.
Off the grid, not off the map
We are not connected to the power grid. Solar and wind run the lights and hot water, and our water comes filtered from a mountain spring. There is no television and mobile signal is weak, which is much of the point. Wi-Fi is available in the cottages and common areas for those who need it.
Where you stay
Three of the cottages are restored estate buildings: Stone Cottage, Planters Cottage and Planters Annexe. The fourth, Woodhouse, is a pair of pinewood cabins with attic lofts, raised on pillars so the slope beneath was left undisturbed. Breakfast is included, along with a 4x4 transfer up the final off-road stretch. Lunch and dinner are home-style Kerala meals cooked by our chef and served on request.

Expect birdsong, butterflies and the odd insect, spider, toad or, in the rains, leech. We ask guests to treat the land and everything living on it with respect. Here, you are a guest in nature's home.
