We're north India's first zero waste guesthouse located in Bikaner, Rajasthan! We are a social enterprise that invests 20% of profits into environmental action and education projects in North India.
Hara House is a zero waste guesthouse and social enterprise investing 20% of profits into environmental action and education projects. We believe we can change the future of the travel industry by giving travelers the resources and tools they need to be conscious consumers. We believe that doing so influences communities to think about how they consume and to implement their own sustainable practices into their lives and homes.
We run a community hub providing youth with fun and educational workshops that focus on professional and personal development and environmental action.
We run day tours (walking and soon biking!) through Bikaner and overnight trips where travelers can experience homestays and overnight desert safaris.
Don't be scared of zero waste, we make it accessible and easy to do with our implemented system and processes!
Here's just a sneak peak to some of our zero waste practices:
#NoPlastic: We do not purchase products that come in plastic packaging. We provide reusable tote bags to guests to eliminate the need for disposable bags while shopping. Our waste management systems ensures if plastic is unavoidable for certain products, it is put back in the system through closed loop recycling in Bikaner.
Water Consumption: We encourage timed showers. We use grey water to clean our floors and flush our toilets that we collect from our hand washing sinks and laundry. PLUS with our natural soap, made from soap berries, we can use grey water to keep our rooftop garden thriving!
“Waste” Disposal: Compost right onsite to help our urban herb garden grow, and if recyclables are obtained throughout your stay, set them aside to empower local entrepreneurs selling recyclable waste to manufacturers, helping close the loop! When it comes to your personal “waste”, you are welcome to use post-consumer waste toilet paper provided onsite or go Indian style!
Coming in 2019:
#CowPoopPower: Biofuel is all the rage in India, and an exciting opportunity to minimize our carbon footprint. That’s why we’re keeping our tandoor 100% cow poop powered.
Energy Consumption: Our solar energy production heats our water (when needed in the winter months) and helps power our home. We aim to achieve a 100% solar produced guesthouse by 2021 (but preferably sooner!).
