Slieve Aughty Centre is an Ecotourism Ireland certified eco-resort in harmony with nature in the Slieve Aughty Mountains near Loughrea in county Galway, Ireland. Miles of forest and river trails are waiting to be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, or with the company of a friendly donkey!
The centre boasts a BHS approved equestrian centre with a cross country course, organic fruit and vegetable garden, Enchanted Forest, arts and crafts room, play area for children, farm animals, picturesque gardens, outdoor Italian garden with a clay oven, library, workshop space, and various accommodation options, as well as wedding facilities. Set on 17 acres and surrounded by more than 2,000 acres of forestry, it is an escape to the wild Irish west.
While most of the day you will be out and about exploring the forest, visiting the fairy folk, sightseeing, or meeting the horses and ponies, sleeping options include everything from camping to the luxurious bridal suite. Opened in 2012, The Three Towers Eco House and Organic Kitchen offers 9 beautiful bedrooms and a certified organic restaurant. Standard with all rooms is an organic continental breakfast, or if you want to spend your days on site book full board. The eco bedrooms are designed with comfort and rustic luxury in mind. 7 of the 9 rooms open onto scenic balconies, and the bridal suite and family room are perfect for special occasions or larger groups. There are no televisions or wifi in the bedrooms as we believe in creating a space to spend quality time with family and friends and get out into nature.
Next to the Three Towers sit two spacious Eco-lodges, a glamping cabin, and the playground hut and tipi (seasonal) offer affordable luxury camping options, with shared toilet, shower and kitchen facilities. The Chalet de Florence sleeps 6, with a double bed in the loft (reached by a sturdy ladder), a 2nd bedroom with 2 sets of bunk beds, open floor plan sitting room and kitchen, wood burning stove and one bathroom with a shower. The Birds and Bees Lodge is similar but with only one bedroom and a pull-out sofa for little ones. It also features a private balcony. Glamping and camping is a more affordable way to stay at the centre and enjoy all the activities and organic food.
Slieve Aughty Centre is very proud of its Eco-credentials and is one of only 2 restaurants in Ireland to have earned organic status, and the only one in the west. Every guest is given a free reusable water bottle as we ask guests not to bring any plastic on site, and daily cleaning service and towel and linen replacement is by request only for stays of 1 week or less. The bar is stocked with a mix of organic wines, beers and craft ciders and the organic garden supplies much of the fresh fruit and veg used in the summer. In your room, Irish organic beauty products are supplied by Voya. Behind the scenes, we use only eco-friendly cleaning agents, have installed low-flow taps, shower heads, and toilets throughout, treat our wastewater with a peat filtration system, harvest rainwater for use in the stables and garden, and heat The Three Towers with a state of the art biomass burning boiler.
For groups, The Three Towers Eco House & Organic Kitchen offers intimate weddings, parties, workshops, organic dining and corporate events. Seating is possible for up to 80 people in the dining and reception area and the marble floors are great for dancing the night away. Indoor and outdoor options are available for ceremonies and meetings and the centre is happy to organise activities for children and adults.
Ireland has many beautiful and and iconic places to see, and with your base in East Galway you can reach everything from castles to mountains to beaches in a day's drive. Here’s just a few that you can visit on a day trip or tour from the Three Towers Eco House:
-Pallas Castle: Built in the mid 13th century by Richard DeBurgo, Pallas Castle in Tynagh is one of the best preserved Castle Keeps in Ireland but is largely unknown. The castle sits in a farm field and should be visited with respect for the farm and general countryside, close the gates and take home only what you brought with you, and its only about 15 minutes away.
- Galway City, a thriving, bohemian, cultural city on the western coast of Ireland. Along with being a popular seaside destination with beautiful beaches and long winding promenade, it also has a buzzing cosmopolitan city centre. The city is a joy to explore with its labyrinthine cobbled streets, colourful shop façades and busy café/ bar culture.
- Cliffs of Moher, on a clear day, views from the cliff tops include the Aran Islands, Galway Bay and the Twelve Bens mountain range. The cliffs are a Special Protected Area due to the myriad species of sea birds that call the cliff face home.
- The Burren, The word “Burren” comes from an Irish word “Boíreann” meaning a rocky place. This is an extremely appropriate name when you consider the lack of soil cover and the extent of exposed Limestone Pavement. However it has been referred to in the past as “Fertile rock” due to the mixture of nutrient rich herb and floral species.
- Portumna Castle, a magnificent location on the shores of Lough Derg on the River Shannon. Although gutted by fire in 1826, the Castle is still an imposing example of Irish architecture of the early 17th Century.
- The Workhouse Centre, Portumna, an institution which operated in Ireland for a period of some 80 years, from the early 1840s to the 1920s. There were 163 workhouses in total. If people could not support themselves, they could come into the workhouse.
- Birr Castle, starting with Ireland’s Historic Science Centre in the old stable block, with its café and shop you can then explore 50 hectares of park land, visit the magnificent Formal Gardens and terraces and discover Birr’s world famous engineering and astronomical wonder – the Great Telescope.

I had a fantastic time staying in the glamping cabin! Such a nice getaway from the city. Ester and all the staff were so friendly and accommodating. It felt like a home away from home. Will definitely plan another trip out here!
