La Maison de Wakefield is a gorgeous 18th century stone townhouse is nestled in the heart of the enchanting medieval village of Martel in the Dordogne Valley, situated in the stunning department of the Lot in the Occitanie region. It is under 5 hours’ drive from Paris, 1 hour 45 minutes north of Toulouse and 2 hours east of Bordeaux.
The house was built between the rampart walls of the village and its foundations are from the 12th century. La Maison de Wakefield oozes with French country charm yet includes the conveniences travellers expect from a luxury stay. Lovingly restored the house features chandeliers, fireplaces and wide wooden floorboards and is furnished with many brocante finds offset by a chic palette of taupe, grey and white with green and raspberry accents. The house contains all the little extras to make your stay special with Wi-fi, Freesat TV, records and CDs, games and books available for your entertainment.
Your boutique self-contained accommodation has 3 queen bedrooms and a fourth bedroom with a single daybed which doubles as a cosy second sitting room, under the eaves. There are two bedrooms on each floor, with their own sitting area and a writing desk or table. Three bedrooms are ensuite with a fourth bathroom on the ground floor. Access to the first and second floors is via a winding wooden staircase. Step out of the formal lounge room on the ground floor into the bijou stone courtyard, perfect for drinking an aperitif in the evenings or your morning coffee. The traditionally French style eat in kitchen is fully equipped for preparing meals and has a large antique oak dining table which seats up to 7 comfortably.
The property offers versatile accommodation suitable for a broad range of travellers including couples, groups of friends, honeymooners, food and wine lovers, weekend adventurers etc. While the house accommodates up to 7 people comfortably, it is perfect for two couples or singles as they would have their own floor each.
Steeped in history, Martel is the perfect place to relax and unwind and live like a local. It is surrounded by rolling hills, farmland and walnut groves with a population of around 1600. The village has all the services required for your stay including restaurants, cafes and bars, supermarkets, bakeries, boutiques, banks and medical services, all within walking distance. Local attractions include chateaux, museums, parks and gardens, cheese, truffle and walnut farms, wineries and distilleries with brocante and farmers markets occurring regularly in a nearby village or town.
La Maison de Wakefield is the perfect base for exploring the real French countryside. You can forget you are a tourist as you immerse yourself in the local cuisine, customs and culture.
The property is based eco-tourism principles wherever possible. Organic cotton bedlinen and towels and organic soaps, shampoos and cleaning products are provided, and a deluxe welcome basket with locally sourced and organic items including a bottle of organic wine, organic coffee and teas.
Guests will gain access by obtaining the key from the key lock box. A Property Manager is on call for urgent queries or assistance. La Maison de Wakefield only accepts guests over 12 years old, is strictly non-smoking and no pets are allowed. A refundable damages fee of 300 euros is payable with the final payment. La Maison de Wakefield has a 3 night minimum booking.
