Bordeaux is unusual in that it's small and so walkable. Mascaret Garden Home is perfectly situated for discovering Bordeaux, and for daytrips by train to the ocean and countryside!

THE SPACE IS PERFECT for meditation and yoga, writing and creating, creative cooking, or just relaxing in a Zen haven of green biodiversity in the city! It is truly our home and not an impersonal business run by a concierge employee. Perfect for artists, university professors and students, couples on a romantic getaway, friends and families, business travelers. The entire apartment is yours: I like to greet my guests at check-in, then I'm available if needed. There's a key box for late night check-in.

WHAT MAKES THIS SPACE UNIQUE?
Our home was built in 1900 in the Biarritz Style, all the rage for weekend homes of the nouveaux riche. This historical architectural style includes: artisanal hand-sculpted “rocaille,” meaning “faux bois” that imitates vines and trees.

The Story of Rue du Mascaret:
The word “mascaret” is the name of the Atlantic Ocean “reflux tide”, a twice yearly event at the Spring & Fall Equinox, when the moon’s pull makes the tide flow upriver in a mini tidal wave!! It’s a popular local event to watch the Mascaret Tide and its surfers from the shore of the Garonne River.

History of the Home:
When we bought the Mascaret home in 2007, it had been neglected for years. Since we are both visual artists (art studio is the nearby Atelier le Loft), we saw it was a historical home and have lovingly renovated it little by little, improving something each year. Airbnb is a new adventure!

Why Rent?
The latest renovation of the Mascaret home has been: Restoring the hand-crafted “rocaille” by a historical certified artisan. Our next improvement: Solar hot water heater and photo-voltaic solar panels for electricity. Your participation in renting will help immensely!

Now 100% Ecological:
The Mascaret home is now an “eco-lodge” and All Natural & Organic Products Showroom -- The renovation has been in the spirit of eco-construction, and the garden and cleaning products are all 100% certified organic and bio-degradable. We offer a complimentary bottle of organic Bordeaux wine from Château Le Jaugueret (or other) as our gift, to make your stay extra special...!!

The Space:
The 50m2 (450 sq ft) 2 bedroom apartment has been renovated simply and in good taste. It’s naturally warm in winter and cool in summer with “French air conditioning” -- thick insulated walls, and keeping windows/shutters closed on hot summer days. The inertia electric radiator provides economic, cozy heating. With windows front and back, there is good airflow and natural light.

The Mascaret Garden:
The natural garden 80m2 (720 sq ft) is a delight all day long, and in the evening for "apero" cocktails and dinner in the garden, since the sky stays light long after sunset.
This is an organic natural garden with no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. We've improved the garden year by year with compost, letting endemic "weeds" flourish, a haven for birds and insects. You are welcome to use the aromatic herbs and edible flowers in cooking or to make sachets. You'll enjoy relaxing in the peaceful garden with a glass of Bordeaux wine after a day of sightseeing!

GUEST ACCESS:
Upstairs neighbors: The 2nd floor apartment is rented to two students.
The main entrance is the front gate on the street, through the garden to both apartments.
The ground floor front terrace overlooking the garden and the tiny back courtyard go with the Ecobnb ground floor apartment.

EQUIPEMENT & PRODUCTS --
You've guessed... Everything in our home is 100% natural & organic !

LIVING ROOM:
WiFi wireless high speed internet, work table, HD flat screen television with 60 channels, table and 4 wooden chairs, couch and cushions, candles & organic air freshener, electric economic inertia radiators.

KITCHEN:
Savon du Marseille hand soap, sponges and dish brush, organic liquid dishwash, linen tea towel, hand towel, oven mitts. Natural gas stove & electric oven, refrigerator with freezer, electric kettle, Moulinex coffee maker. Everything needed to cook fine meals; place settings for 6 people. Mugs, glasses, wine glasses.

Help yourself to the 100% organic products: olive oil, vinegar, mustard, ethical coffee, green tea, herbal tea, sugar & powdered milk, salt & pepper; Biodégradable cleaning products; Eco-Planète recycled paper napkins, paper towels.
NOTE: As eco-responsable guests, you will of course replace the essential food products you've used up (coffee, olive oil) -- Please buy the same organic brand from the nearby supermarket (7 min walk).

BATHROOM:
Organic hand soap, honey shower gel & shampoo, hair dryer, first aid kit. Organic bath cleaning products, Eco-Planète toilet paper. Cotton bath mat.

LAUNDRY SPACE:
Clothes washer & dryer, clothes line, biodegradable organic washing soap, softener, white vinegar. Steam iron, ironing board, lavendar spray mist.

BEDS:
The Ikea double beds are 140 x 200 cm, with firm, comfortable mattresses. This is a standard French double bed size, more narrow than Queen size. The pillows are organic recycled mousse or feather/duvet. 2 pillows each, plus bolster.

BED LINENS & TOWELS:
We furnish high quality linens in organic cotton & 2-3 towels each person, maximum 4 adults. No wash cloths provided (they wear out too quickly). Natural wool blankets, one comforter for each bed. Four beach towels, 2 beach bags; extra organic pillows, blankets, towels.

In accordance with French law, the host may verify the identity of guests by requesting official identity card and/or passport.
SMOKING outside in the garden is accepted. No barbecues. No parties or loud music. No animals.

SECURITY:
Smoke detector in the living room. First aid kit in the bathroom. Emergency numbers are listed in the House Manual. When leaving for the day, please make sure windows and shutters are closed, and front door and garden gate are locked.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE:
Please respect our apartment with an eco-responsible spirit -- and leave it as you would a friend's home:
If you finish one of the food products provided (coffee, olive oil), please replace with the same organic product, or leave money in the kitty.
Leave the space “Broom Clean”: Light cleanup, leave sheets on beds.
Take out trash and recyclables; Use the composter.
Please use the bio-degradable cleaning products provided.

BELCIER / GARE ST JEAN TRAIN STATION NEIGHBORHOOD:
The neighborhood is a lively mixture of old and new, in transition. Belcier is in back of the Gare St Jean train station, traditionally a residential neighborhood with green spaces, schools, cafés & restaurants, now also construction sites and workers. On the main entrance side of the Gare St Jean towards the historical center is the artsy neighborhood Ste Croix, with the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Port de la Lune theater.

Unfortunately, there are prostitutes in the Belcier neighborhood, but this does not make it dangerous, and women can walk safely alone late at night. We would like the situation to improve, but for the moment "c'est comme ça"! The neighborhood is peaceful in the daytime, more lively at night with nearby nightclubs and their clients. Happily the apartment is insulated with double glazed windows, so your sleep won't be disturbed.

NOTATION OF THE PLACEMENT/ NEIGHBORHOOD:
Please note that if you stay at the Mascaret Garden Home, and then you give a poor rating (3*) on the placement (neighborhood), WE WILL BE PENALIZED IN OUR OVERALL RATING, as if it was our fault! So if this kind of lively mixed neighborhood offends you, please don't come! Thank you for your understanding.

GETTING AROUND + PARKING:

PROXIMITY to St Jean train station (5 min walk), with:
Airport Shuttle, taxis, shops, bike rental, Hertz car rental, buses, and tramway. The multilingual Tourist Information Center is inside the train station. It’s easy to get to the historical center of Bordeaux by bike (rent at Gare St. Jean) or by walking (20 min) along the Garonne Riverfront Walkway, or by tramway from the Gare St. Jean train station (7 min by tramway to city center).
Total: 12-20 minutes from the Mascaret Garden Home to the Old City.

PARKING: On street parking, or parking building nearby. Limited free parking on Quai Paludate. (See photos + map)
