A large three-sided courtyard, one hectare of natural garden, a small lake, a footbridge and lots of nature... flocks of swallows and a concert of frogs, a sea of flowers and wildflower meadows, beautiful views of the hilly landscape and a large starry sky...
THE SWALLOW HOUSE
We rent two holiday apartments on the ground floor of our farmhouse with direct garden access for 2-3 or 4-6 people, both can be connected to each other so up to 10 guests can have a good time together.
Our troll is also by the pond and has space for 2.
The sunny rooms in both apartments are spacious and colorfully furnished.
The small apartment has its own entrance, and on rare occasions we go through the hallway of the large apartment.
The kitchen-living rooms are equipped with everything you need, you can help yourself to the herb garden and our vegetable garden sometimes has a few fruits left over for our guests. In late summer there are as many plums, pears and apples as your heart desires.
I have lovingly renovated the farm over the last few years using ecological building materials, all the bathrooms are new.
Now 100 years old, the house has seen a lot, some of which you can still see, but it is precisely these 'wrinkles' that shape the charm of the house, tell its story and give it its rural flair.
And then there is the Troll, our almost 60-year-old Eriba caravan, which stands at the very end of the property, in the middle of nature and right by the pond. Deer and raccoons like to stop by and the frogs give their concert until early summer.
We live here ourselves and are approachable most of the time. If the weather is good, we sometimes have a fire for everyone in the evening.
It is very quiet here, no more than a dozen cars pass by a day, but you can sometimes hear a machine from my lighting workshop.
GARDEN, NATURE and SURROUNDINGS
Just behind the house there is a light forest, fields and paths invite you to go for a walk or a bike ride... but you don't actually have to leave here, the view of the landscape is so beautiful when you sit under the fruit trees or on the jetty or let yourself drift on the raft and listen to the frog concert.
Each apartment has its own space outside. The garden is available to all guests and under the large apple tree by the pond there is a meeting point with a fireplace for all guests and visitors.
The natural garden, which was gradually created and is constantly changing, has grown very beautifully and lushly over the years and there is always something blooming somewhere between April and October.
It is particularly beautiful from mid-May, when all the roses outdo each other and all the green is still fresh.
But winter also has its charm and with a bit of luck you can go ice skating on the pond.
In nearby Rehna with its beautiful monastery you can get what you need to live.
The Baltic coast, Lübeck, Wismar, Schwerin and Ratzeburg can be reached by car in 30 to 40 minutes.
The Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve is also only half an hour away by car.
ECOLOGY
Preserving and carefully renovating a 100-year-old house is a big step towards a sustainable future. Wherever possible, I used ecological building materials, preserved, repaired, saved and recycled many things. For example, the 12 windows facing the street are as old as the house; I refurbished them and reinforced them for the installation of insulating glass.
As long as it does not affect the character of the house, everything is well insulated. The sun provides us with hot water and electricity - soon also for charging electric cars.
For the winter, there is a pellet heating system and several fireplaces and tiled stoves.
The bedrooms are equipped with shielded cables.
The renaturation of over one hectare of land and the 1000 m² pond was particularly important to me. The natural garden now offers a habitat for a variety of plants and animals and has become an island of life in the agriculture that surrounds us.
Many birds have their home here, the tawny owl lives in the hayloft, swallows and bats take turns hunting for insects, deer, foxes, raccoons and other fellows stop by in the evenings and at night.
There are plenty of old and newly planted fruit trees, a large vegetable garden with a greenhouse and of course a composting area that is happy to receive all organic waste from the kitchens.
The wastewater is cleaned by an organic sewage treatment plant.
There is a lot more to tell about this, but actually these are all a matter of course when you bring a place like this back to life.
INFORMATION and ARRIVAL
We rent the apartments and the troll for five nights or more, and six nights or more during the summer holidays.
There is no TV, but there is WiFi via fiber optic in the apartments and the house.
The farm is only partially suitable for small children as the pond is freely accessible.
Unfortunately, pets cannot be brought along.
You can travel by train via Schwerin directly to Rehna or continue via Lübeck to Schönberg and from there take the local bus line 145 to Rehna.
There are enough parking spaces for your car in the yard, and a charging station for electric cars is being planned.
