Salzburg is a city that seduces and enchants everyone. It fascinates you for the musical tradition that you can breathe in every corner and which is the protagonist of countless festivals, for the beauty of its baroque buildings. It enchants you for the calm that its river infuses and for the fairytale atmosphere of the medieval alleys of the historic center. As if this wasn’t enough, Salzburg is a perfect destination for a low environmental impact holiday: it can be easily reached by train, you can visit it on foot or by bike without any problems and there is no shortage of organic restaurants.
Our journey to discover Salzburg
The Hohensalzburg fortress watches over the city from the top of Mount Festungsberg and immediately catches the eye of all of us travelers. We can reach it on foot or by funicular, to visit the rooms with the original furnishings and the two museums that now are in what is certainly the symbol of Salzburg and the oh the archbishop’s power. After admiring the city and the green surroundings from the castle, it is time to immerse ourselves in the streets of the center and discover all the treasures of this Austrian city.
Its baroque heart is divided in two by the Salzach river: on the right bank, the Mirabell Castle awaits us, with its royal garden, together with the most modern area of the city, on the left bank there is the old town, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here we find the house in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. To the musical genius Salzburg owes its identity as a music metropolis. The house, now a beautiful museum, is located on Getreidegasse, a pedestrian street where we can admire the wrought iron signs typical of medieval shops and the high facades in typical Salzburg style. Among churches, palaces and baroque fountains we cannot fail to stop in front of the refined beauty of the Cathedral, in the splendid Residenzplatz, or immerse ourselves in culture thanks to the 50 galleries and 20 museums of the city.
The surrounding nature
The surroundings of Salzburg offer emotions too. A few steps from the city we can discover magnificent natural landscapes, bike on the many cycle paths such as the Tauern cycle path, admire the Krimml waterfall, which with its 380 meters of height is among the largest in Europe, discover everything about the extraction of salt, climb the peaks that surround the city or even diving into one of the many and enchanting lakes. Furthermore, the Salzburger Land is the region of Europe where there’s the highest concentration of organic farms: we certainly cannot miss the opportunity to discover a lifestyle in harmony with the earth and natural resources and its genuine, healthy and authentic flavors.
Salzburg, city of festivals
Salzburg is the stage of the world. Mozart’s music seems to resonate everywhere, and the city celebrates culture at all times, offering around 4,500 cultural events throughout the year. In 1920 Max Reinhardt, among others, inaugurated the Salzburg Festival, one of the most important festivals of classical music, theater and opera in the world. Then there is the jazz festival, the Winterfest, a circus arts festival and the magic of Salzburg Advent Songs. No matter what period you choose, Salzburg will welcome you with a truly incredible event.
Typical and organic flavors of Salzburg
Salzburg is able to satisfy everyone, from those looking for an elegant garden where they can relax to those who want to immerse themselves in culture, from those who love history to those who want to discover pristine nature. It is therefore not surprising that the gastronomic tradition is also up to par. In this land where agriculture is mainly sustainable, it is easy to find an organic restaurant that offers the typical products of the area: chanterelles, smoked speck, mountain cheeses, fine distilled spirits and the famous desserts. The Salzburger Nockerl is the best way to finish any meal: a delicious soufflé made up of three soft sweet dumplings that represent the mountain peaks that surround the city. Salzburg is also the Austrian capital of beer: why not take advantage of this holiday to fully understand the noble art of the master brewers and taste excellent beers?
