Walk the Lake Maggiore Trail — 230 km of beauty, history, and nature across Italy and Switzerland. Experience slow, ethical, and sustainable travel.
The Lake Maggiore Trail is a unique route of 230 kilometers divided into 11 stages, connecting the two shores of the lake across Lombardy, Piedmont, and Switzerland. It’s not just a walking path but a journey that brings together breathtaking landscapes, history, culture, and local communities.
The creation of this trail is the result of four years of participatory mapping, a meticulous process that involved local communities directly and led to the development of an accessible, sustainable, and meaningful route.
How the Lake Maggiore Trail Was Born

Since 2020, more than 500 people have participated in the creation of the trail, contributing their knowledge, stories, and experiences. Thanks to this collaboration, the route has become a genuine reflection of the territory — combining nature, culture, and community life.
The project’s defining feature is participatory mapping, which transforms each stage into an authentic experience, far from mass tourism, and brings hikers closer to the people who live along the way.
Inauguration and Routes

The Lake Maggiore Trail was officially inaugurated by Tracciaminima on April 24, 2025, with an inaugural journey that took place from April 24 to May 4.
The route is open to everyone — from seasoned hikers to travelers seeking slow, authentic experiences.
But what does it mean to explore the lake “in a new way”?
It means walking slowly, respecting nature and its inhabitants, and rediscovering the territory through genuine encounters and meaningful connections.
The creators of the Lake Maggiore Trail hope the project will become a long-term sustainable initiative, one that actively involves residents and fosters responsible tourism.
Their ultimate goal is to build a network that supports local communities, preserves the environment, and promotes a model of tourism based on care, respect, and authenticity.
An itinerary for sustainable tourism

The trail forms a 230-kilometer circular route that loops around the lake, crossing Lombardy, Piedmont, and Switzerland. It passes through charming villages, historic towns, and areas of natural and cultural interest.
Along the way, travelers can admire breathtaking lake views, immerse themselves in nature, and discover the quiet beauty of the region — all while avoiding traffic and overcrowded tourist areas.
