If you are looking for a weekend immersed in nature and the unique atmosphere of the Lecco Alps, Pasturo is the perfect destination. This peaceful village, located in the picturesque Valsassina in the province of Lecco, lies at the foot of the Grigne mountains and offers breathtaking views.

Here’s how to make the most of two days among walks, nature, and moments of relaxation while discovering Pasturo and its surroundings.

Why choose Pasturo for a weekend in Valsassina

Pasturo is one of the most authentic villages in the valley, known for its dairy tradition and for being the gateway to the Grigne mountains. Walking through the historic center, you will find cobbled streets, ancient courtyards, and stone houses, making this village a true alpine gem to explore on foot.

Church of Sant’Eusebio: history and Baroque art

In the heart of Pasturo stands the parish church of Sant’Eusebio. Its origins date back to the 13th century, but the current structure derives from expansions commissioned by Saint Charles Borromeo at the end of the 16th century.

Inside, the presbytery features a bright depiction of the Ascension (1756), and the choir walls are decorated with paintings by the Carloni family. Also not to be missed are the polychrome marble high altar and the 1771 organ. The visit is free, but it is best to avoid religious services.

Walking in the footsteps of Agnese from The Betrothed

Pasturo is linked to Agnese, Lucia’s mother in The Betrothed, described by Alessandro Manzoni as originally from this village. On Via San Giacomo, there is a stone house indicated as her birthplace. The streets and rural architecture will make you relive the atmosphere that inspired Manzoni.

The House of Antonia Pozzi and the Poetic Path

On the main street stands the house of the Milanese poet Antonia Pozzi, who loved spending her holidays here. The study, with notebooks and books, can only be visited on special occasions.

To better understand her life and works, you can follow the Poetic Path, an itinerary through the places that inspired her poems in the village.

Cortabbio Mining Park of Primaluna

Located on the north-eastern side of the Grigna Settentrionale, the Cortabbio Mining Park of Primaluna allows you to explore over 1,000 meters of illuminated tunnels where barite was extracted for 150 years.

The guided route starts from the “Nuovo Ribasso” at 552 meters above sea level and leads to spectacular caves, passing old machinery and mineral veins. It has recently been made accessible also to people with disabilities.

There are many trekking options you can choose from—here are a couple of the most beautiful (in my opinion):

1. Trekking in the Barzio–Pasturo plain

Perfect for families, this easy route develops in a green basin ideal for relaxing walks and outdoor picnics.

2. Ascent to the Piani di Artavaggio

From Culmine di San Pietro or Moggio, this route crosses sunny plateaus up to Rifugio Nicola, at the foot of Mount Sodadura. You can also use the cable car if you want to make the walk easier. The loop towards Piani di Nava also includes the Church of San Calimero, with its characteristic red roof.

When to visit Pasturo: the best season for trekking and nature

Spring is the perfect time for a weekend in Valsassina: longer days, mild temperatures, and some snow still on the peaks make trekking especially enjoyable.

Don’t leave without tasting local cheeses such as artisanal goat cheese, quartirolo, and taleggio. You will find several dairies outside the village where you can buy these delicacies, perfect also as a gastronomic souvenir.
