Imagine cycling along an old railway line, where rails have given way to a natural path. Where tunnels are not rushed, and the Andalusian landscape stretches out calmly under a clear sky. This is the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Greenway – a route that invites you to travel with open senses and an open heart.

Just over an hour from Seville, this cycling route follows the old railway used to transport iron from the mines of Cerro del Hierro. Today, it’s a slow-travel path for walking or cycling. With over 19 kilometers of track, it’s perfect for connecting with nature in the heart of Sierra Morena.

A journey through holm oaks, heritage, and old stations

The route begins in Cazalla-Constantina and follows the former railway to San Nicolás del Puerto. Along the way, it crosses through pastures, restored train stations, and tunnels that whisper the history of this old mining route. The highlight is the striking Cerro del Hierro, a karstic natural monument.

More than just a bike ride, this journey leads through a living landscape shaped by mining, grazing, and the passing of centuries. Today, it’s a space reclaimed for those who wish to enjoy it at a more mindful pace.

Cerro del Hierro

This Natural Monument is one of the main highlights of the route. It’s a former mining site with unique rock formations and underground tunnels. Beyond its impressive scenery, Cerro del Hierro is also a top destination for sport climbing. There are routes for all skill levels, making it a popular choice for adventure lovers.

Huéznar River spring and riverside forest

Near San Nicolás del Puerto, you’ll find the crystal-clear spring where the Huéznar River begins. This cool, green oasis is perfect for a break, especially in summer. It’s an ideal place to relax, enjoy a picnic, or take a short walk among ferns and poplars.

Further along the river, a lush gallery forest provides natural shade for much of the greenway. With ash, willow, and alder trees lining the path, this section offers a refreshing ride – especially in spring or autumn.

Birdwatching in a protected natural area

This greenway crosses a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). It’s a great spot for birdwatching. Black kites, griffon vultures, and other birds of prey soar above the route. If you enjoy wildlife, bring binoculars for an even better experience.

Bike rental on the Greenway

No bike? No problem. In San Nicolás del Puerto, you’ll find bike rental services – including electric bikes – for families, couples, or solo adventurers. Some rural accommodations also offer bikes or can arrange them for guests.

The route is mostly flat, well-marked, and shaded in many parts. It’s accessible and enjoyable for all levels, including beginners in cycle tourism.
