Looking for a nature-filled holiday in northern France? The Normandy region is the perfect place to recharge your body and mind, thanks to its breathtaking landscapes and rich, diverse nature. Normandy is not just about Mont-Saint-Michel, pristine beaches, and charming coastal villages—it’s also home to four regional natural parks, which cover 17% of the region’s territory. So, set off to explore these protected places and their must-see spots!

1. Meadows and Wildlife in the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park

Located between Manche and Calvados, the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park is known for its diverse scenery: hedgerows, meadows, and peat bogs. In winter, flooding creates the spectacular phenomenon of the “white marshes”, particularly visible in La Haye-du-Puits, Baupte, and Saint-Côme-du-Mont. This vast wetland area is a haven for many plant and animal species. Birdwatchers should visit the Sensitive Natural Area of the Ponts d’Ouve Marshes: from its observation points, you can admire numerous migratory birds in their natural habitat. To start your journey through this magnificent area and explore all its outdoor activities, head to the Maison du Parc, the park’s main visitor center located in Carentan-les-Marais.

2. Loops of the Seine: Nature and Normandy Traditions

If you’re looking for beautiful river valleys shaped by the Seine and charming castles, the Seine River Loops Regional Nature Park is the perfect destination. Stretching from Rouen to Le Havre, this natural area offers a wide range of landscapes: cliffs, plateaus, forests, and wetlands along the river. Discover local architecture along the Chaumière Route, a picturesque trail showcasing traditional thatched cottages and Normandy craftsmanship. We recommend exploring the park by bike, following a 400 km cycling route from Paris to Le Havre and Deauville. This greenway lets you enjoy the park’s preserved nature without missing iconic Normandy cities like Giverny, Rouen, and Honfleur.

3. Bucolic Landscapes in the Perche Regional Nature Park

Among Normandy’s nature parks, the Perche Regional Nature Park is without a doubt the most bucolic. Be enchanted by its gentle hills, lush forests, and elegant manors scattered throughout the countryside. Don’t miss the Manoir de Courboyer in Nocé, set on a stunning 65-hectare estate. Another must-see is the famous Château Saint-Jean in Nogent-le-Rotrou, a medieval fortress dating back to the 11th century. To immerse yourself in the history and traditions of the Perche region, visit the Perche Ecomuseum, dedicated to preserving its geographic, historical, and ethnological heritage. The park is also a top destination for hiking enthusiasts, with over 3,000 km of walking, mountain biking, and horse-riding trails!

4. Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park: The Beauty of Normandy’s Mountains

Established in 1975, the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park stretches from Normandy to the Pays de la Loire region. With 25% of its area covered in forest, it enchants visitors with its wild nature and picturesque villages. Mountain lovers will be amazed by the stunning Alpes Mancelles, with their rugged peaks and green gorges. For walks accessible to all levels, head to the Andaines or Ecouves forests. But hiking isn’t the only option! If you enjoy canoeing or kayaking, you’ll love the rivers that flow through the park, including the Sarthe, Varenne, and Cance. Finally, don’t miss a visit to the wonderful Château de Carrouges, a true Norman gem. Its majestic architecture and stunning red-brick towers will leave you speechless!
