50 years after the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the protection of the environment, Sweden will be hosting World Environment Day 2022.
The theme: #OnlyOneEarth
June 5th, 2022, will mark World Environment Day, as designed by the Stockholm Conference in 1972.
This year’s theme is #OnlyOneEarth and it was chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Conference, that used the same motto. The theme couldn’t be less accurate: Planet Earth is only one and it is our challenge and responsibility to protect it. It recalls the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature as resources are finite and must be safeguarded.
The 1972 Stockholm Conference
Sweden was chosen to host World Environment Day 2022 for its environmental commitment since the 1972 Stockholm Conference, the first world conference on the environment.
The 1972 Stockholm Conference resulted in the creation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), a body that promotes sustainable development and encourages the implementation of the environmental agenda.
It also led to the Stockholm Declaration on the Human Environment, an ambitious action plan that serves as a guide for the preservation of the environment.
Finally, the 1972 Stockholm Conference designed June 5th as World Environment Day every year.
