Discovering the Biutiful B&B amid the breathtaking landscapes of the Parmense Apennines opens the door to a world of sustainability and environmental awareness. In this interview, Federico shares how a long-distance walking journey ignited a mission to live with mindfulness about our planet’s impact. With B&B Biutiful, Federico and his partner Rossana have realized their dream of authentic and sustainable hospitality, rooted in the pristine nature of Berceto along the Via Francigena trail.
What sparked your passion for environmental sustainability?
In 2009, I walked the Camino de Santiago, and I saw firsthand the ecological harm that careless tourism can cause. Over 1500 kilometers, I used just two plastic bottles, washed clothes and myself with a single eco-friendly soap, avoided junk and packaged foods, and, of course, used no diesel or gasoline. At some point, I wondered: what if we all lived like this? That was my first awakening to a strong ecological consciousness—a path I haven’t strayed from since.
What aspects do you consider fundamental in your journey toward eco-sustainability?
Making thoughtful, eco-conscious choices that fit the scale of our business, our available resources, and our budget is crucial. I avoid greenwashing, which often tempts with low-cost, high-visibility shortcuts. I believe deeply meaningful paths may not be flashy or easy to communicate but leave a lasting impact on the environment and those inspired to follow in our footsteps.
How would you describe your ideal “eco-traveler” guest?
Our ideal guest respects our “house rules” for sustainability, including:
- Minimizing waste and carefully sorting recyclables.
- Interacting with our chickens by giving them vegetable scraps.
- Unplugging chargers and turning off lights.
- Conserving water.
- Shopping at local farms and small shops instead of supermarkets.
- Choosing nearby, non-gentrified destinations, like small villages and forest hikes.
- Using the organic cleaning products we provide.
- Using our coffee machine, which uses whole beans instead of disposable pods.
- Turning off the heat when going to bed.
What is the most meaningful review you’ve received, and why?
It may sound simple, but the most recent review is always the most important. After years of hosting, there’s a risk of letting certain standards slide, of “going on autopilot.” I love when guests write warm reviews that clearly convey useful details for future guests. One recent review on Ecobnb from Viola captured this: “Wonderful stay with Rossana and Federico: the B&B is very eco-friendly and well-kept, and they are both incredibly kind.” It sums up exactly what we hope guests take away from their experience with us.
Let’s bust the myth that eco-sustainability must be expensive. Do you believe “eco-friendly” can also mean “economical”?
Keeping our hospitality “accessible” has always been a priority. Perhaps “economical” isn’t the right word; it’s about valuing things appropriately, not undervaluing our work. This requires considerable communication and education efforts.
In our small shop, guests can buy products from our farm. These items may be more expensive than in large stores, but it’s up to us to explain the quality and labor involved. When guests choose to cook in-house using our pasta, eggs, and vegetables, they often save money while enjoying wholesome, authentic food.
My advice is to help guests see the value in forsaking unnecessary luxuries, focusing instead on what is virtuous, traceable, natural, and rich in authentic stories and values.
What green initiatives have brought you the most satisfaction, and which do guests appreciate the most?
Our “treasure hunt” has been a favorite, not only as a green initiative but as a way to illustrate the tangible impact of our eco-friendly choices. We’ve placed small chests around our garden with clues about our environmental practices. As they explore, guests discover our gardens, water catchment areas, greenhouse, wood stove, chickens, solar panels, and fireplace, collecting beads from each chest that represent various elements. At the end, they create a bracelet to take home as a keepsake.
It’s wonderful to watch families lose track of time, reconnecting with the simple essentials that define life: food, water, fire, and relationships.
How do Ecobnb’s values and projects resonate with your establishment?
When we found Ecobnb, one principle resonated deeply with us: the “ecology of relationships.” Ecobnb is about people who answer emails and phone calls professionally yet warmly, with honesty and empathy. This human connection stands in stark contrast to the overly gamified, productivity-driven, impersonal touch of big-name platforms. Ecobnb is imperfect, grounded, sometimes messy, and deeply human—all qualities that make it so dear to us.
Thank you, Federico! Biutiful B&B is an inspiring example of how a love for nature can translate into conscious and sustainable hospitality. Federico has reminded us that thoughtful hospitality can become a journey of reconnection and a rediscovery of what truly matters. This is why Biutiful is not only highly rated by its guests but also a favorite for the Ecobnb Awards, thanks to an approach that transcends ecotourism to inspire everyone who passes through.
