The six winners of the <strong>Goldman Environmental Prize<\/strong> in 2016 are amazing people, the <strong>modern<\/strong> <strong>heroes<\/strong>, who devote their lives to the <strong>preservation<\/strong> <strong>of the planet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize award was founded in 1990 and is almost like an ecology Nobel, a <strong>Nobel Prize for the Environment<\/strong>, which rewards people who positively change the world, even at the risk of their own lives.<br \/>\nThis is the case of Berta C\u00e0ceres, Honduran activist, who tried\u00a0to protect the lands and indigenous peoples of her\u00a0country and won for that the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015, and who was murdered on March 3.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s winners come from different parts of the world and have completely different origins, but a common goal: to <strong>save<\/strong> the <strong>Earth<\/strong> and the future of their <strong>communities<\/strong>. They are farmers, lawyers or activists who have overturned government decisions, fought and won against the multinationals.<\/p>\n<h2>Who are the winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2016?<\/h2>\n<h3>Zuzana \u010caputov\u00e1<\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9513\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_ZuzanaCaputova_07-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Zuzana \u010caputov\u00e1 (in the middle), 2016 Goldman Enviromental Prize winner\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_ZuzanaCaputova_07-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_ZuzanaCaputova_07-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Zuzana lives in Pezinok, a town in western <strong>Slovakia<\/strong>; she&#8217;s a lawyer, mother of two daughters.She managed to close the toxic <strong>landfill<\/strong>\u00a0that was poisoning the land and damaging the health of her\u00a0community. She lived near the landfill, where the toxic waste from different countries of Western Europe were unloaded. In front of the numerous diagnoses of <strong>cancer<\/strong>, leukemia and respiratory diseases of relatives, friends and neighbors she started and continued, along with her\u00a0community, a <strong>peaceful<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>battle<\/strong> for the closure of the landfill. And she won.<\/p>\n<h3>M\u00e1xima Acu\u00f1a<\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-9510\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/IMG_1618_edit.jpg\" alt=\"M\u00e1xima Acu\u00f1a, 2016 Goldman Enviromental Prize winner\" width=\"870\" height=\"718\" \/><\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1xima is a <strong>Peruvian<\/strong> <strong>farmer<\/strong>. She can not read or write, but single-handedly stopped a billion dollar <strong>multinational<\/strong>. The fourth largest <strong>mine<\/strong> of <strong>gold<\/strong> in the world, the Yanacocha, wanted to expand and thus destroy her\u00a024.8 hectares of land and another type of gold, the blue one, <strong>water<\/strong>. Despite numerous harassment and violence, including the killing of the livestock and the construction of a wire mesh with vigilantes day and night only 200m from her\u00a0home, M\u00e1xima has never given up and continues to fight to defend the <strong>Andes<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Destiny Watford<\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9512\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_DestinyWatford_01-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Destiny Watford, winner of Goldman Environmental Prize 2016\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_DestinyWatford_01-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_DestinyWatford_01-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Destiny today is 20 years old, but when she began her\u00a0fight against the construction of the largest US <strong>incinerator<\/strong> was\u00a0only 17. Destiny lives in Curtis Bay neighborhood, in <strong>Baltimore<\/strong>, where the landscape is made of oil refineries and chemical installations. The community already resented the high rate of <strong>pollution<\/strong>, but that has not stopped the state, which in 2010 approved the construction plan of the largest waste incinerator. But \u00a0she was there\u00a0to stop the state, Destiny, who didn&#8217;t\u00a0want an incinerator one kilometer from his high school. Thus began a battle of four years; with the help of her\u00a0classmates and then the whole community, Destiny and Baltimore have reached the goal, the incinerator will not be made.<\/p>\n<h3>Leng\u00a0Ouch<\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9508\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_LengOuch_12-1-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Leng Ouch, winner of Goldman Environmental Prize\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_LengOuch_12-1-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_LengOuch_12-1-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Leng lives in <strong>Cambodia<\/strong>, a very dangerous country for environmental activists. He alone has fought against a <strong>corrupt<\/strong> <strong>government<\/strong> and multinational. He started working undercover and was able to document the unlawful conduct of the government that was expropriating the land of the families selling them to multinational\u00a0for <strong>financial<\/strong> <strong>gain<\/strong>. After published all the documents and carried out protests with the communities, the battle of Leng was successful: the government canceled the <strong>expropriation<\/strong> contracts of more than 50,000 acres of land, including those hosting <strong>species in danger of extinction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Luis Jorge Rivera Herrera<\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9511\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_LuisJorgeRiveraHerrera_12-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Luis Jorge Rivera Hernandez,winner of this year Goldman Environmental Prize \" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_LuisJorgeRiveraHerrera_12-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_LuisJorgeRiveraHerrera_12-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The battle of Luis lasted 16 years, but he has never thought of abandoning the Nature. He&#8217;s a naturalist of <strong>Puerto<\/strong> <strong>Rico<\/strong>, and its fate was marked by the expropriation of the family land for the construction of a\u00a0waste water treatment plant. He was 8 then, but from that day he knew what he wanted to do in life. After his degree in environmental science, in 1999 he discovered that the government was going to build a <strong>mega<\/strong> <strong>resort<\/strong> in a Puerto Rican protected area. Thus began his battle to protect nature, the animals, and to share the gifts of nature with his son. After 16 years and many obstacles, the area became a <strong>nature<\/strong> <strong>reserve<\/strong> thanks to Luis and the 3500 hotel rooms will not ever exist; more than 50 species of animals threatened with extinction, including the leatherback turtle, are safe.<\/p>\n<h3>Edward Loure<\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9509\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_EdwardLoure_02-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Edward Loure, Goldman Environmental Prize winner\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_EdwardLoure_02-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_EdwardLoure_02-536x301.jpg 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_EdwardLoure_02-570x320.jpg 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/05\/2016_EdwardLoure_02-344x193.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Edward\u00a0is a Masai tribal chief in <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>, he has a degree in management and has been working for his community and has always been committed to the preservation of the planet. Through a long struggle, he managed to stop the construction of <strong>illegal intensive farms<\/strong> and huge safari and <strong>resort<\/strong>, returning the land and the fields to the <strong>indigenous<\/strong> <strong>communities<\/strong> of the country, which has always been lived\u00a0in harmony with nature and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They are ordinary people, they are like us. Yet they are the heroes who have saved animals, lands and communities. And thanks to them the world is better. And we, what can we do?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Let us wake up!\u00a0Let us wake up, humankind! We&#8217;re out of time!
