The citizens, though encouraged to use clean and free tap water, can still purchase plastic bottles; but in public buildings and properties of the city plastic bottles will become illegal in a few days.<br \/>\nIn the United States each year are used almost\u00a0<strong>50 million plastic bottles <\/strong>and, according to reports from the Campaign Ban the bottle, only <strong>23% is recycled<\/strong>. They are scary numbers, whereas the production of plastic bottles requires about <strong>17 million barrels of oil<\/strong> a year.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-8654 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/110129542-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"San Francisco bans plastic bottles\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/110129542-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/110129542-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>plastics industry<\/strong> is one of the most polluting industries in the world, consuming as much oil as that used by the airline industry, according to the 2016 report of the <strong>World Economic Forum<\/strong>. And if the forecasts tell us that over the next few years we&#8217;ll use more and more plastic, it is clear the need to do something to <strong>change<\/strong> things and to reverse these trends to save our earth and our <strong>oceans<\/strong>. To date we are not able to recycle any plastic packaging, but only <strong>5%<\/strong> of them and only once, as opposed to <strong>glass and aluminum<\/strong> which <strong>can be recycled indefinitely<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-8653\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault1-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Plastic island in Pacific Ocean\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault1-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault1-536x302.jpg 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault1-570x320.jpg 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault1-344x194.jpg 344w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><br \/>\nWhat San Francisco is doing\u00a0is a momentous decision, but it is not the first time that the city of California is mentioned\u00a0for its vanguard in the field of <strong>sustainability<\/strong>. To reach the<strong> goal of zero waste by 2020<\/strong> the city has long since started to improve things, starting with the <strong>promotion<\/strong> of <strong>composting<\/strong> and <strong>recycling.<\/strong> Currently <strong>80% of the waste<\/strong> no longer goes into local landfills, but they <strong>are processed and recycled<\/strong> by Recology.<\/p>\n<p>Think of all the supermarkets of our cities, with the shelves always filled with plastic bottles when most of us can use of tap water. Think how much <strong>useless<\/strong> <strong>plastic<\/strong>\u00a0we produce.
