What made you choose this particular place, surrounded by greenery, olive trees, terraced hillsides and the sea?

The farmhouse, together with the other buildings on the property, has belonged to our family for generations and has been passed down from father to son. These places were once home to farming families who made their living from agriculture and flower growing.

After the last farmer passed away and following a fairly long period of abandonment, we decided to invest in restoring the property, with the desire to bring back the beauty and atmosphere that must have characterised La Collina di San Rocco as far back as the late nineteenth century.

We therefore chose to renovate the farmhouses according to the principles of sustainable building and, at the same time, to restore the olive grove and orchard, with the idea of sharing this place with people who, like us, love nature.

What also helped us fully understand the uniqueness of the hill was the fact that the entire property, which extends for more than one hectare of terraced hillsides and olive trees, has never been divided into separate plots over the centuries.

As a result, a large green hollow overlooking the sea of Nervi has remained, surprisingly untouched.

Childhood memories among the terraces and olive trees

What does La Collina di San Rocco mean to you? Is there a particular memory, image or moment that made you fall in love with this place?

My strongest memory goes back to my childhood. My grandfather and I would take a long walk to visit the farmers who lived on the hill. When it was time to say goodbye, they would often return the visit by giving us baskets full of fresh produce from the vegetable garden and orchard, along with eggs from their chickens.

What I remember most is the path through the terraces and the feeling that the olive grove would never end. Even though I was just a short distance from the city, I felt as if I had entered a completely different world, far from everyday life and the urban environment.

It is probably from those memories that our strong connection with this place still comes today.

The unhurried rhythm of the olive trees

Your olive grove covers around one and a half hectares and is home to more than 300 olive trees, many of them centuries old. What is your relationship with these trees and with the agricultural tradition of the area?

Our professional lives are quite hectic and often require us to move around, making us feel increasingly like “citizens of the world”. For this very reason, we are particularly protective of this little haven, a place where it still seems possible to escape the rush of time.

Activities such as pruning and caring for the olive trees, which require care, attention and consistency, take on a different meaning here. These are moments that allow us to rediscover a more natural rhythm and a direct connection with the land and with a tradition that belongs to the history of our family and this area.

Caring for the terraces and dry-stone walls

Photo via Canva PRO

The dry-stone terraces are one of the most distinctive features of the Ligurian landscape. The school was also among the earliest initiatives of its kind in Europe to open enrolment to women, representing a small but important step towards women’s emancipation. Later, while still alive, our ancestor decided to donate both the school and the land to the State.

Looking back at this history today makes us feel, in a sense, responsible for its legacy. That is why the restoration of the farmhouses, olive grove, orchard and terraces is not simply a building project, but also a way of keeping alive that same spirit of care, sharing and attention to the local area.

Experiences to discover and enjoy the hill

You also offer guests the opportunity to discover olive growing more closely through activities such as pruning. What other experiences would you like to offer guests beyond simply staying here?

We would like staying at La Collina to be an opportunity to connect with the local area in a more conscious way. In addition to activities related to olive tree pruning, we would like to tell our guests more about the value of biodiversity and its importance for cultivation and environmental protection.

We are also planning a sensory trail that will cross the entire property, allowing visitors to gradually discover its different environments, scents, plants, and views. The idea is for La Collina to be not simply a place to stay, but a landscape to explore and experience.

A different side of Liguria

Are there any trails, walks, villages or green activities nearby that you particularly enjoy recommending? Which places would you suggest to someone who wants to discover a less conventional side of Liguria?

The entire hinterland behind La Collina di San Rocco offers beautiful hiking trails, many of which are still relatively little known, ideal for discovering a more authentic Liguria away from the most popular routes.

At the same time, we are ideally located for reaching some of the most beautiful places along the Ligurian Riviera. Heading east, you will find Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino, extraordinary places that can also be explored along scenic trails.

And of course, we always recommend the Anita Garibaldi promenade in Nervi, one of the area’s landmarks, where the landscape changes once again and the greenery gives way to the sea.

A more conscious relationship with the local area

What kind of relationship would you like your guests to develop with the local area? Is there something you hope they will learn, discover or take away with them after their stay?

We would like our guests to appreciate the particular balance that characterises this place: on one side, the terraces shaped over centuries by human work; on the other, the sea and a natural environment that remains the protagonist.

It is precisely this contrast, and at the same time this harmony, that makes the hill so special. We hope that those who stay here can slow down, look at the landscape with different eyes and understand how the Ligurian landscape is the result of an ancient and delicate relationship between people and nature.

More than something tangible, we would like our guests to take home an emotion and a different way of experiencing and observing the local area.

What does being part of the Ecobnb community mean to you?

For us, it is a new experience that we strongly believe in because we feel that the values promoted by Ecobnb are deeply aligned with those at the heart of our project.

We hope that becoming part of this community will help us introduce La Collina di San Rocco to an audience that cares about sustainability, protecting the local area and more conscious ways of travelling.

It is therefore not simply about gaining greater visibility, but above all about connecting with people who share the same idea of hospitality and respect for the environment.

The dream for the future

Finally, what is your dream for the future of La Collina di San Rocco?

The project at La Collina began more than ten years ago and, by its very nature, continues to evolve. Our goal is to gradually restore another five farmhouses on the property, one of which is already well advanced in its renovation.

At the same time, we would like to make the entire property increasingly accessible, creating connections through lifts, roads and small paths that will allow people to move between the different terraces without excessive effort.

The ultimate dream is to create a true sensory trail crossing the entire property: starting from the cliffs and the sea of Nervi and climbing through olive groves, orchards and terraced hillsides until reaching the beautiful little church of San Rocco, where our land ends.

A trail that can tell, step by step, the story, nature and soul of this place.

A story that continues to grow

La Collina di San Rocco is an example of how restoring a place can become a project capable of weaving together memory, nature and the future. The old farmhouses, centuries-old olive trees, dry-stone walls and terraced hillsides are not simply elements of the landscape: they are part of a story that continues to be preserved and, at the same time, shared with those who visit.

The future envisioned by the Marsano family follows the same path: gradually restoring the other farmhouses, making the property more accessible and creating a sensory trail connecting the sea with the little church of San Rocco, passing through olive groves, orchards and ancient terraces.

A trail that, step by step, can tell the story of this place and its relationship with the surrounding area. And that can allow guests to discover a different side of Liguria, shaped not only by the sea, but also by land, memory, biodiversity and people who continue to care for it.

Cover image: View of the sea of Nervi from La Collina di San Rocco

A family story, centuries-old olive
