Here, the landscape is constantly changing: from the forests of Val Leogra to the rocky slopes of Mount Pasubio, from small mountain hamlets to trails crossing places marked by history.

It is a destination for those who love walking, exploring and pausing to listen to the silence of the mountains. But also for those who want to discover a landscape where nature and the memory of the First World War are deeply intertwined.

Here, among meadows and mountains, you can follow some of the most scenic trails in the Little Dolomites, from the famous Road of the 52 Tunnels to the paths of the Sengio Alto, as well as quieter routes through forests, hamlets and along mountain streams.

What to See in Valli del Pasubio?

Valli del Pasubio combines hiking, dramatic mountain scenery and places connected to the history of the First World War. Among the places worth discovering are Mount Pasubio, the Road of the 52 Tunnels, the Pasubio Ossuary, the First Army Museum, Mount Baffelan, Mount Cornetto and the trails around Campogrosso.

But to truly get to know this corner of Veneto, it is worth slowing down and alternating longer hikes with shorter walks, leaving time to explore the small mountain hamlets and rural landscapes as well.

Where the Mountains Preserve the Memory of the First World War

As you climb towards Mount Pasubio, the landscape still bears clear traces of the years of the First World War. Roads, tunnels, military mule tracks and fortifications follow the mountain slopes, reminding us of the strategic importance this territory once had during the conflict.

No machine-readable author provided. Built to preserve the remains of fallen soldiers, the monument contains the remains of more than 5,000 men. Nearby, the First Army Museum brings together documents, objects and testimonies that help tell the story of the events that took place in these mountains.

Yet it is above all by walking through the landscape that this memory becomes tangible. The Road of the 52 Tunnels, military mule tracks and trails leading towards the higher slopes cross places where the mountains still bear the marks of the conflict. The silence of the forests and the imposing rocky walls contrast with the structures built here by soldiers more than a century ago.

Hiking in the Mountains of Pasubio

For those who love hiking, Valli del Pasubio offers a wide variety of trails, from walks along the Leogra stream and through the mountain hamlets to more demanding routes in the Little Dolomites.

Photo via Canva Pro

The most famous route is undoubtedly the Road of the 52 Tunnels, one of the most spectacular surviving testimonies of the First World War. The military mule track stretches for around 6.5 kilometres along the southern side of Mount Pasubio and passes through 52 tunnels carved directly into the rock. It was built in 1917, in just nine months, to allow Italian troops to reach their high-altitude positions while remaining protected from enemy fire.

Today, walking along it means crossing a remarkable mountain landscape, with rocky walls, passages through the darkness of the tunnels and sudden openings onto wide views. It is a route for experienced hikers, where history and nature meet at every turn.

Another possibility is the Road of the Heroes, which leads towards Rifugio Achille Papa via Val di Fieno and the Galleria d’Havet. The historic section of the Road of the Heroes runs for around 2 kilometres along the walls of Val Canale, while the complete route from the Pian delle Fugazze area to the mountain refuge is 10.6 kilometres long.

Not every hike, however, requires reaching the highest elevations. The area also offers trails through the middle mountain landscape, where walking becomes an opportunity to discover the surroundings at a slower pace.

From Sengio Alto to the Mountain Hamlets

One of the most fascinating areas to explore is Sengio Alto, the mountain range that includes Mount Cornetto, the Tre Apostoli and Mount Baffelan and stretches along the border between Vicenza and Trento.

Here you can follow the Campogrosso Circuit, a circular route of around 10 kilometres crossing both sides of the Sengio Alto. Along the way, you encounter the Pasubio Ossuary, the AVIS suspension bridge and Rifugio Campogrosso, while the peaks of the Little Dolomites open up around you.

The landscape changes again as you descend into the valley. Valli del Pasubio is home to numerous small mountain hamlets, each offering a glimpse into the rural history of the area. For those looking for quieter walks, the trails along the Leogra stream or through the hamlets reveal a more everyday side of mountain life, away from the most frequented high-altitude routes.

The Via dell’Acqua, or Water Route, also offers a chance to discover this quieter side of the valley, following historic structures and traces of the activities that for centuries made use of the power of water. Among the places to visit is the historic Venetian-style sawmill, which already existed at the end of the 18th century and remained in operation until 1969.

Among forests and streams, the landscape also reveals unexpected corners such as the Brazzavalle Waterfall, in the Balasso area. Water plunges for around 30 metres through the vegetation, creating a small natural spectacle that can also be viewed from the panoramic platform known as the Glass Cube.

Where to Stay in Valli del Pasubio: La Pervinca

To experience the area at a slower pace and stay in an accommodation that adopts several environmental practices, we recommend La Pervinca, a 17th-century house renovated using raw earth, lime, and wood.

La Pervinca is located at an altitude of 600 metres, in Contrà Costapiana di Sopra, on a quiet plateau at the foot of the Little Dolomites.
