The Canonica of Santa Maria di Vezzolano<\/strong> is located in the Basso Monferrato<\/strong>, within the UNESCO-listed landscapes of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero<\/a>, where Romanesque heritage is scattered across small villages and rolling hills. First documented in 1095, it is one of the best-preserved medieval sites in Piedmont and one of the most important landmarks of the Rete Romanica di Collina<\/strong> (Romanesque Hill Network).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The canonica is home to remarkable artistic features, including a magnificent cloister and a rare jub\u00e9<\/strong> (rood screen), whose sculptures retain their original colours. But Vezzolano is also a starting point for discovering a much broader heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romanesque Heritage Beyond the Beaten Track<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Rete Romanica di Collina brings together numerous churches and municipalities, including sites of remarkable artistic value such as the Abbey of Santa Fede<\/strong> and the Church of San Genesio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The network’s value lies precisely in connecting places that, taken individually, would be unlikely to become tourist destinations. Romanesque heritage thus becomes a shared, widespread treasure to be discovered along a route rather than through a single visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Romanesque Trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Romanesque Trail<\/strong> connects the churches and municipalities in the network along a 190-kilometre route divided into seven stages. The first stage starts in Vezzolano and reaches Andezeno<\/strong>, covering almost 28 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shorter route, meanwhile, connects Castelnuovo Don Bosco to Vezzolano<\/strong>, passing along secondary roads, through farmland and along trails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you walk, Romanesque architecture can be appreciated within the landscape that has preserved it. The route also passes through vineyards<\/strong>, an essential part of the local economy. Along the way, you’ll find Freisa, Barbera, Malvasia and Bonarda<\/strong> grape varieties: not just a landscape to admire, but the result of agricultural activity that continues to shape the identity of the Monferrato<\/a><\/strong> region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the difference between travelling to Vezzolano and arriving on foot: the surrounding landscape becomes part of the visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Heritage Still Waiting to Be Discovered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The trail offers a different perspective on Piedmont’s cultural heritage. The Romanesque churches are not simply monuments to visit one after another, but stages in a shared story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not a single monument that creates the itinerary, but a network of small heritage sites that creates a new destination.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an interesting model from a tourism perspective, too: connecting several places helps distribute visitors’ attention and encourages the discovery of small municipalities and local communities that are usually off the beaten track. It also means supporting local businesses by choosing regional products whenever possible and helping keep economic value within the communities along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Vezzolano, the protection of heritage goes beyond architecture. Next to the canonica, there is an orchard dedicated to the recovery of ancient local fruit varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preserving these plants means protecting biodiversity, agricultural knowledge, and the memory of the landscape. It is a tangible example of how heritage can encompass both a medieval sculpture and a traditional fruit variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Romanesque Trail shows how culture and sustainability can come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking at least part of the route means reducing car travel, but also stopping in small towns, discovering local businesses, and experiencing the landscape more mindfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canonica of Santa Maria di Vezzolano thus becomes more than a destination: it is the starting point of a network that brings together many small, often little-known heritage sites into a single itinerary to be experienced at a leisurely pace<\/strong>. Romanesque heritage is no longer simply something to visit, but a way to get to know the landscape and the communities that continue to preserve it today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
