It is the best place to begin planning, but availability of online tickets varies. On smaller routes, travelers may still confirm the departure locally and pay the driver in cash.

The vehicle may be a full-size coach, a minibus or a shared van often called a furgon. Larger services generally follow published times, while smaller vehicles can operate more flexibly. Confirm the terminal and departure time the day before, especially in Tirana, where intercity terminals are outside the historic center.

Although travelling by public transport may require a little more flexibility, it also offers the opportunity to observe everyday life, meet local people and experience the country beyond its main tourist attractions.

Build a route around longer stays

A charming cobbled alley in Berat, Albania’s UNESCO-listed “City of a Thousand Windows,” where centuries of Ottoman architecture and slow-paced local life create a unique atmosphere. One practical route is Tirana to Berat, then south through Gjirokastër before continuing toward Himarë or Sarandë. Each is a destination worth at least two nights, not simply a stop between beaches.

That slower rhythm has a local benefit. Instead of changing hotels every night, travelers can choose a locally owned guesthouse, return to the same café, book a neighborhood guide or join a small boat trip. The important point is not that every small business is automatically sustainable. It is that travelers can ask who owns and operates a service, then make an informed choice.

Travelling slowly also reduces the pressure to “see everything”, encouraging a more meaningful connection with each destination rather than simply ticking places off a list.

<img decoding="async" width="870" height="490" src="https://ecobnb.com/blog/app/uploads/sites/3/2026/08/albania-without-a-car-2-gjirokaster-870x490.jpg" alt="Gjirokastër's stone houses above the Drino valley. When reasonably occupied, that can reduce transport emissions per passenger compared with several separate rental cars. The exact benefit depends on the vehicle, route and number of passengers, so it is better to describe shared transport as a practical lower-impact option rather than a perfect one.

According to the European Environment Agency, collective transport generally produces considerably lower greenhouse gas emissions per passenger than private cars, particularly when vehicles operate with high occupancy. While every journey is different, choosing shared transport is often one of the easiest ways to reduce the environmental impact of travelling.

There are tradeoffs. Services can be less frequent later in the day and at weekends. Some coastal or mountain connections require a change. Door-to-door access is limited, and a taxi may still be useful for the final few kilometers.

Five habits that make the journey easier

Check eTransport, then confirm the departure locally

Carry lek in small notes

Save terminals and accommodation as offline map pins

Avoid tight same-day connections

Travel in spring or autumn when possible

Bonus tip: leave room for spontaneity. Some of the most memorable moments in Albania happen between destinations: a family-run café beside a bus station, a conversation with fellow passengers or an unexpected stop in a small town.

Let the slower route be the point

Llogara National Park is one of Albania’s most spectacular natural landscapes, offering scenic hiking trails, rich biodiversity and breathtaking views of the Ionian coast.

Albania’s visitor economy is growing quickly. How travelers move, where they sleep and which businesses they choose will help determine who benefits from that growth.

Going without a rental car will not suit every itinerary. For travelers with time, however, shared transport offers something valuable: fewer rushed stops, more contact with the places between the highlights and more opportunities to spend directly with the people who live along the route.

Travelling without a car is not about sacrificing freedom. It is about discovering that moving more slowly often leads to richer experiences, a lighter environmental footprint and a deeper appreciation of Albania’s landscapes, culture and everyday life.
