On average, <strong>one ton of extracted material<\/strong> generates about <strong>1.4 tons of radioactive waste<\/strong> (solid, liquid, or gaseous), as well as <strong>one ton of wastewater contaminated<\/strong> with ammonium sulfate and heavy metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures help illustrate the scale of the issue, which becomes even clearer when looking at real-world examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The case of Bayan Obo mine (China)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Bayan Obo<\/strong> mine, the largest in China, is one of the most significant examples. Every year, for about <strong>100 tons of concentrated rare earths<\/strong>, up to <strong>200 tons of thorium dioxide waste<\/strong> are produced, a radioactive byproduct that represents a serious environmental concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Processing plants in Malaysia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Malaysia, some rare earth processing plants were <strong>shut down due to severe environmental impacts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main issues identified include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>water contamination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>emissions and greenhouse gas production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pollution linked to refining processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These cases show that the impact is not limited to extraction, but extends to industrial processing stages as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research and studies on pollution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At an international level, several studies are underway. Some focus on developing technologies to <strong>contain and manage radioactive waste<\/strong>, while others aim to recover rare earth elements directly from industrial and mining residues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is twofold: to reduce environmental impact and to improve resource recovery efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u201curban mine\u201d: the potential of electronic waste<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electronic waste (e-waste)<\/strong> represents both an environmental challenge and a potential source of critical raw materials, including rare earth elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/ewastemonitor.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GEM_2020_Executive_summery.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data shows <\/a>a steady increase in the phenomenon: in 2019, around <strong>53.6 million tons of electronic waste<\/strong> were generated globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this enormous volume, today we recover <strong>less than 1% of rare earth elements<\/strong> contained in electronic devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge is structural: these critical metals are present in <strong>very small quantities<\/strong>, and electronic devices are not designed for easy recycling.
