When people think of Marseille<\/strong>, they often imagine the Old Port, busy streets, and the Mediterranean atmosphere of southern France<\/strong>. But beyond the city lies another side of the region: limestone cliffs<\/strong>, turquoise water<\/strong>, hiking trails<\/strong>, and quiet coastal towns surrounded by nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my trip to Marseille last year, I also stayed in Cassis<\/strong>, a small seaside town known for its connection to the Calanques National Park<\/strong>. Exploring the area on foot made the experience feel slower, more authentic, and more connected to nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discovering Marseille Beyond the Tourist Areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Marseille is one of the most vibrant and multicultural cities in France<\/a><\/strong>. While its famous landmarks are worth visiting, one of the best ways to experience the city sustainably is simply by walking through its different neighborhoods, viewpoints, and coastal paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Old Port to the hills around Notre-Dame de la Garde<\/strong>, the city offers incredible panoramic views of the sea, the surrounding mountains, and the Mediterranean coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes the city especially fascinating is the contrast between its urban energy and the peaceful natural landscapes<\/strong> found just outside it. Marseille feels alive, intense, and dynamic, yet nature is always close by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiking Through the Calanques National Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights of the trip was hiking in the Calanques National Park<\/a>, located between Marseille and Cassis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Calanques are famous for their white limestone cliffs<\/strong>, hidden beaches, and crystal-clear water. Reaching some of the viewpoints requires hiking under the Mediterranean sun, but the scenery makes every step worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The atmosphere inside the park feels completely different from the city. Pine forests<\/strong>, rugged paths, dramatic cliffs, and quiet coves create the perfect setting for slow and mindful travel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring the Calanques on foot <\/strong>is also one of the most sustainable ways to experience the area. Hiking reduces the environmental impact of the visit while allowing travelers to appreciate the landscape at a slower and more respectful pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cassis: A Slower Mediterranean Escape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Compared to Marseille, Cassis has a calmer and more intimate atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its small harbor, colorful streets, and coastal views make it the perfect place to slow down after a day of hiking. Early mornings in Cassis feel especially peaceful, with quiet streets and the sound of boats near the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town is also an excellent destination for sustainable travel, thanks to its walkable center, local restaurants, and easy access to nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainable Experiences on the French Mediterranean Coast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Traveling sustainably in Marseille and Cassis often means choosing simple experiences: walking more<\/a><\/strong>, spending time outdoors, supporting local restaurant and businesses, staying in eco-conscious accommodation<\/a><\/strong>, and avoiding overcrowded tourist activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a destination where the journey matters as much as the places you visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
