At the heart of this revival<\/strong> is Strongoli Borgo Petelia<\/a><\/strong>, an albergo diffuso<\/strong> that is part of a wider historic center regeneration project, nurtured for over a decade by Neaitos, in collaboration with the local community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke with Mattia<\/strong>, the manager of this innovative accommodation, part of Strongoli\u2019s downtown renaissance. Here\u2019s what he shared with us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did Strongoli Borgo Petelia come to life?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The revitalization of Strongoli\u2019s historic center is a cornerstone of the extensive territorial regeneration project<\/strong> that Neaitos has been carrying out for over ten years in partnership with local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neaitos is a design company and research spin-off from the University of Perugia, founded in September 2007 by former Urban Planning students<\/strong> and their professor after three years of studying the Calabrian Ionian coast through the European research initiative \u201cTerritorial Information System Calabria<\/strong>.\u201d The company\u2019s mission is to collaborate with local communities and administrations to foster socio-economic growth while highlighting the extraordinary environmental, agricultural, and historical heritage of Strongoli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco-friendly initiatives and community support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Creating a<\/strong>n albergo diffuso<\/a><\/strong> is a smart strategy to combat the decline of small villages<\/strong> \u2013 particularly in Southern Italy \u2013 while bringing renewed confidence<\/strong> and entrepreneurial energy<\/strong> to a territory that might otherwise face abandonment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restored homes<\/strong> become part of the village\u2019s economic life, breathing new energy into the community<\/strong>. Putting them back on the market funds further restoration, creating a virtuous circle that preserves heritage<\/strong> and generates new reasons to stay<\/strong>. The surrounding landscape<\/strong> unfolds into golden wheat hills, lush vineyards, and steep olive groves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Neto River<\/strong> flows below, lined with gravel banks and oleanders, opening into a legendary lagoon at its mouth, once a refuge for the Trojan exiles who founded the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inland, blue mountain ranges<\/strong> mark the beginning of endless forests, streams, and the lakes of the Sila<\/a><\/strong>. Fifteen kilometers of pristine beach, fringed with pinewoods and Mediterranean scrub protected by the European Community, host migratory birds and rare wildlife along a cobalt sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
