The Via Verde de la Sierra<\/strong>, in southern Spain, is one of them: a cycling journey through old railway landscapes<\/strong>, dramatic gorges, and whitewashed villages steeped in history. A slow-paced ride between olive groves<\/strong>, tunnels<\/strong>, viaducts<\/strong>, and wild nature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A route between two white villages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The greenway begins in Puerto Serrano<\/strong>, where a restored train station<\/strong> welcomes travelers with bike rental, basic services, and a small restaurant<\/strong>. From here, the path gently follows the course of the Guadalete River<\/strong>, flanked by riverside vegetation and rolling hills. Midway, at the Coripe station<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find another rest stop, ideal for a break, a meal, or even an overnight stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey ends in Olvera<\/strong>, one of the most picturesque villages in the province of C\u00e1diz<\/strong>. The Zaframag\u00f3n Rock and the flight of vultures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most magical moments of the route is the passage by the Zaframag\u00f3n Rock<\/strong>, a stunning limestone formation declared a Nature Reserve<\/strong>. It hosts one of the largest colonies of griffon vultures in Europe<\/strong>. Bring binoculars, stop for a moment, and look up\u2014you\u2019ll likely see these majestic birds soaring effortlessly in the thermal currents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This railway was designed in the early 20th century to connect Jerez<\/strong> and Almargen<\/strong>, but it was never used by trains. You can start the route in either Puerto Serrano<\/strong> or Olvera<\/strong>, both of which offer parking areas and basic facilities. From Seville<\/strong>, the fastest option is by car<\/strong> (around 1 hour and 20 minutes to Puerto Serrano). From C\u00e1diz<\/strong>, travel time to Olvera is similar. There\u2019s no direct public transportation<\/strong>, though some rural accommodations offer pick-up services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route is mostly flat<\/strong> and well-marked<\/strong>, with a gentle incline when going from Puerto Serrano to Olvera. The surface is either compacted soil or well-maintained asphalt<\/strong>, suitable for mountain bikes, hybrids, or walkers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
