What\u2019s the story behind Refugio Marnes? How did it all begin?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Richard:<\/strong> Twenty-five years ago, Willem and I moved from the Netherlands to Spain\u2019s Costa Blanca with a dream to create a place where people could find true peace and connection with nature. It took longer than we expected to get everything up and running, but in 2002, we officially opened Refugio Marnes. Our vision was simple: offer a retreat<\/strong> where guests could enjoy the joy of doing nothing and escape mass tourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Willem:<\/strong> Over the years, we\u2019ve seen more and more travelers searching for unique, quiet places like ours. It\u2019s been wonderful to build a community of joyful guests who value stillness and authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us more about yourselves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Richard:<\/strong> I grew up in the Netherlands with a background in food technology and hospitality. Cooking is my passion, and I love preparing meals that highlight the best of local produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Willem:<\/strong> My background is in agriculture and mental health care. I\u2019m fascinated by people, sustainability, and technology. Together, we make a great team: different but complementary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sustainability practices have you implemented?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Willem:<\/strong> Sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We generate our own solar power, carefully manage water use, and renovate using traditional, local materials. We compost, recycle, and encourage guests to live mindfully during their stay. It\u2019s about living in harmony with the environment, not just ticking boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard:<\/strong> We also focus on using fresh, seasonal ingredients, and I love cooking for guests while keeping meat and fish to a minimum<\/a>, offering mostly delicious and varied vegetarian meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there any green itineraries or eco-friendly activities nearby that you usually recommend to your guests?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Richard:<\/strong> Definitely! We often suggest hiking in the Sierra de Bernia or cycling through scenic mountain and coastal trails. The region is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage, which guests can explore while minimizing their footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Willem:<\/strong> We also encourage visits to local farmers’ markets and artisan villages. And sometimes, the best eco-friendly activity is simply relaxing by the pool, reading under a tree, or stargazing at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Willem:<\/strong> Our guests love the tranquility here. Many tell us how the silence and connection to nature recharge their spirits. Others rave about Richard\u2019s home-cooked dinners and the chance to unwind without distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard:<\/strong> It\u2019s also rewarding to see guests engage with local traditions, explore the landscape, and share meaningful conversations. The joy of slowing down is what keeps people coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
