In the heart of Umbria<\/a><\/strong>, among the woods and hills of Castiglione del Lago<\/strong>, we find the Awen Treehouse<\/a> at Casale La Bandita<\/strong> \u2014 a place where love for nature and sustainable innovation come together. In this corner of paradise, Fiammetta<\/strong> has fulfilled a dream that goes beyond hospitality: a space dedicated to sustainability, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation<\/a>. This gem of bioarchitecture<\/strong> is one of the finalists for the Ecobnb Award<\/a>, celebrating the most virtuous and innovative eco-sustainable accommodations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had the opportunity to interview<\/strong> Fiammetta and uncover her story, her commitment, and the vision that fuels her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the spark that ignited your passion for environmental sustainability?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since childhood, I\u2019ve been drawn to a deep connection with nature, a path that led me to take concrete actions to protect it in many ways. From purchasing land in Nicaragua to save it from deforestation, to volunteering abroad to protect sea turtle nests, participating in marine cetacean surveys, and even fighting against poaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to do more: not only to embody my ideals and values but also to reveal the beauty of my homeland, its rich biodiversity, and aspects of animal behavior, zoology, and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best way to realize this dream was to combine my knowledge with hands-on work, conveying a powerful message and fostering direct engagement with people, without filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bioarchitecture is in my blood\u2014my father was an architect with expertise in this field nearly thirty years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Treehouse, then, is the fruit of poetic inspiration, as its Welsh name, Awen, suggests, symbolizing an intimate connection with nature and deeply intertwined cultural and environmental roots. For me, Awen is not merely a stunning and unique treehouse; it embodies a profound bond with my roots and Mother Earth\u2014it\u2019s the expression of my spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which aspects are essential in your journey towards eco-sustainability?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability must encompass the whole world, especially at this critical moment. We can no longer delay; no one can look the other way. We are all called to play our part now, not only to fight climate change<\/strong> but also to recognize that a healthy, lasting environment is inextricably tied to biodiversity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our health and well-being are linked to this balance. My husband Gianni and I are committed to moving forward as best we can, striving to integrate every aspect of the environment, culture, and territory, inspiring curiosity in our guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How would you describe your ideal \u201ceco-traveler\u201d guest?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our ideal eco-traveler is a keen observer of the natural elements<\/strong> across our land\u2014from traces of passing wildlife to the characteristics of trees and the evocative cultural elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, not everyone is inclined to notice or spiritually embrace the small wonders nature offers: it could be an animal\u2019s track or call, or simply the admiration of a natural view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we hope for is that distracted guests, arriving as mere travelers, leave with a bit more \u201cgreen\u201d in their soul, realizing that everything\u2014from the microcosm of our garden<\/strong> to the macrocosm of the landscape<\/strong> \u2014 is perfectly interconnected with nature, as are our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the most meaningful review you\u2019ve received, and what made it special?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We feel immense pride for many of our guests\u2014special souls we welcome as friends. But one young couple truly moved us. They stayed with us for several days, and during their time, they so deeply appreciated the essence of our Treehouse that the young woman decided to tattoo our logo<\/strong> and the name \u201cAwen,\u201d sending us a photo to show her affection. We were deeply moved\u2014this is the magic of nature, uniting people and creating miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s dispel the myth that eco-sustainability is necessarily more expensive. Do you think \u201cEco-friendly\u201d can also mean \u201cEconomical\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s possible to communicate in advance to guests the sustainability efforts undertaken by a property, showing that a return to simpler living \u2014 through things like reducing technology and eliminating single-use products<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 represents a real achievement. Bringing your own toiletries, choosing a digital detox<\/strong> location, and using candles or solar torches<\/strong> instead of standard lighting allows guests to fully appreciate the natural context of their stay and promotes savings, both for the property and, ultimately, for the guest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which green initiatives have brought you the most satisfaction? Which have been the most appreciated by your guests?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The bio-construction of the Treehouse<\/strong>, built with FSC-certified wood and thermally and acoustically insulated with hemp fiber<\/strong>, stands as an extraordinary achievement. Hemp is a highly regarded material in green building, saving 90% of the water normally required for cement production, and it\u2019s also beneficial as an anti-seismic material\u2014vital, given that the Treehouse is in Umbria, an earthquake-prone area. Fascinatingly, ENEA is developing an anti-seismic kit made of hemp fiber panels that can contain the collapse caused by seismic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
