{"id":5704,"date":"2015-03-18T09:37:37","date_gmt":"2015-03-18T08:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/?p=5704"},"modified":"2015-03-26T07:59:34","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T06:59:34","slug":"circumetnea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/circumetnea\/","title":{"rendered":"A railroad through lava rocks: the Circumetnea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mount Etna is one of the icons of <strong>Sicily<\/strong> and, every year, it\u2019s the destination of many tourists; but not everybody knows that there\u2019s a railroad that climbs up the sides of the Sicilian <strong>volcano<\/strong>.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Inaugurated in 1898, the <strong>Circumetnea<\/strong> covers about 110 kilometers in just a little more than 3 hours. An <strong>unconventional<\/strong> journey that starts from <strong>Catania Borgo<\/strong> and ends in <strong>Riposto<\/strong>, passing through many Sicilian small towns, all of them at the feet of Europe\u2019s highest active volcano. So the travel lacks some of the\u00a0 comfort to which mass tourism gets us used to, but it gains more <strong>authenticity and poetry<\/strong>. The slow vehicles, the small stations, the noise of the train: it will feel also like a travel through time. When you pass the town of <strong>Bronte<\/strong>, be prepared to encounter no other towns for a good while; it\u00df\u2019s here that the rail reaches its highest spot: 967 m above sea level, around <strong>Rocca Calanna<\/strong>.
