However, it&#8217;s not just that; it is also <strong>the oldest existing Republic<\/strong>. What I particularly liked about visiting this place is not only the amazing atmosphere, the incredible history, and ancient architecture but also the fact that you feel abroad when you are still in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you want to explore San Marino and have only one day available? Here\u2019s what to see and what to do in 1 day. It was built without foundation directly on the stone and outside it has a double wall circle. The external one with the classic battlements and the decapitated towers at the corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Second Tower<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Cesta<\/strong> or <strong>Fratta<\/strong>, is also of medieval origin with battlemented walls. Here there is the Museum of Ancient Weapons which houses about 535 objects, dating from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Third Tower<\/strong> is called <strong>Montale<\/strong> and is surrounded by greenery and rocks. This tower <strong>is the only one that you can not visit inside<\/strong>. Restaurants in San Marino are not lacking and despite everything are not even too expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>In the afternoon: Basilica, Piazza della Libert\u00e0, and Cava dei Balestrieri<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After refueling (all that walking works up an appetite), I set off again. My next stop is the Basilica of San Marino and the Piazza della Libert\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The <strong>Cathedral<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/basilica-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"The Basilica of San Marino\" class=\"wp-image-55024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/basilica.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/basilica-536x302.jpg 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/basilica-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/basilica-570x320.jpg 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/basilica-344x194.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><figcaption>The Basilica of San Marino, photos via Canva PRO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Cathedral of San Marino<\/strong> is awe-inspiring, especially compared to the square where it is located. It was built between 1826 and 1838 on the site where a 16th-century parish church once stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>white color<\/strong> of the church makes it particularly bright or at least that\u2019s how it seemed to me. Quite small, but well maintained, the square has many bars and cafes where I took the opportunity to take a mid-afternoon break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can find the <strong>Statue of Liberty<\/strong>, located right in the center and made of <strong>Carrara<\/strong> marble. Inside the building, you can admire several memorial stones. The <strong>Public Palace<\/strong>, or Government Palace, was inaugurated on 30 September 1894 with an orator of excellence, Giosu\u00e8 Carducci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Quarry of the Crossbowmen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/Cava-dei-Balestrieri-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"The Crossbowmen's Quarry - \" class=\"wp-image-55027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/Cava-dei-Balestrieri.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/Cava-dei-Balestrieri-536x302.jpg 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/Cava-dei-Balestrieri-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/Cava-dei-Balestrieri-570x320.jpg 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/Cava-dei-Balestrieri-344x194.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><figcaption>The Crossbowmen&#8217;s Quarry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Crossbowmen&#8217;s Quarry<\/strong> is located just behind the Piazza della Libert\u00e0, from which the stones used to restore the Palazzo Pubblico were taken. This quarry is now prepared to host events, mostly set in medieval times, very suggestive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My trip ended however if unlike me you should have more time available here is some useful advice on what to see again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Other Museums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museidistato.sm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Pinacoteca di San Francesco Museum<\/a> is where you can admire famous works such as that of <strong>Guercino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museidistato.sm\/galleriaNazionale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery <\/a>in which are housed about 750 works including that of <strong>Guttuso<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/museodellecuriosita.sm\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Museum of Curiosities<\/a><\/strong> will leave you speechless with its collection of Guinness World Records gathered through characters, news, objects, and much more, such as the world&#8217;s shortest woman or the world&#8217;s heaviest man\u2026 It&#8217;s an ideal museum even for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for the more daring, there&#8217;s also the <strong>Museum of Torture<\/strong>, one of the most unsettling museums worldwide, so if you are easily impressionable, I strongly advise against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The Cable Car<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/funivia-san-marino-1-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"The Cable Car of San Marino\" class=\"wp-image-55035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/funivia-san-marino-1.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/funivia-san-marino-1-536x302.jpg 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/funivia-san-marino-1-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/funivia-san-marino-1-570x320.jpg 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/funivia-san-marino-1-344x194.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A great experience to enjoy all the views from the <strong>top of San Marino<\/strong> to the Adriatic coast is the <strong>cable car<\/strong>. It connects the Castle of Borgo Maggiore with the historic center.
