So wonderful, but not so easy.<br \/>\nI see, you are torn about it. <strong>Bike<\/strong> is perfect: <strong>low-cost, eco-friendly, healthy<\/strong>. And places are marvellous&#8230; But the itinerary is neither short nor banal&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>No one denies you need to be in good shape, but who arrived at the end (maybe leaving from Canterbury!) assure that the main ingredients are perseverance and curiosity. And \u2013 why not? &#8211; the possibility of a little revenge on those athletic friends that keep posting photos on facebook from incredible places.<\/p>\n<p>A really charming feature of this journey is the possibility of going through the<strong> Via Francigena<\/strong> (a really ancient <strong>pilgrim road<\/strong>) for a long stretch. Today it&#8217;s not easy empathize with the reasons that pushed these persons, and yet we keep going through the same roads \u2013 just think about the Camino de Santiago.<br \/>\nWhy? Picture by Shaun Merritt via Flickr<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>The legs of journey by bike<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>8 legs<\/strong> that we suggest have been chosen to fully exploit the possibilities of visiting the art cities and riding in the green. Obviously you can make different choices, the important thing is create an itinerary that is custom-made for yourself and allows you to <strong>take your time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the website <a title=\"bicitalia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bicitalia.org\/cms\/it\/\" target=\"_blank\">bicilalia.org<\/a>\u00a0you can find the itinerary \u201c<strong>Ciclopista del Sole<\/strong>\u201d that starts from Brennero. The way which goes through Modena describes a route that touches Florence and Rome.<br \/>\nIf you click on<a title=\"map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bicitalia.org\/cms\/it\/bicitalia\/bicitalia\/gli-itinerari-bicitalia\/58-bi1-ciclopista-del-sole\" target=\"_blank\"> the map at the top of the page<\/a>, you can obtain useful information about the types of routes that link the legs.<\/p>\n<p>Our last suggestion is to choose carefully the leaving period, avoiding the Summer months. There, a long descend sunk in the greenery allows us to catch our breath. Then we ride along the last stretch of slope from Certaldo Alto to the hill where San Gimignano rises up.<br \/>\nDeclared world heritage site by the Unesco, this medieval village overlooks the high Val d&#8217;Elsa. It&#8217;s famous for its towers and fascinating for its history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our suggestion<\/strong>: before say goodbye to Florence, take a walk inside the\u00a0<a title=\"Giardini di Boboli\" href=\"http:\/\/www.polomuseale.firenze.it\/musei\/?m=boboli\" target=\"_blank\">Giardini di Boboli<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2. We go ahead until Monteriggioni. In the XXXI canticle of the Divina Commedia, Dante Alighieri compared the towers of the its circle of walls to the giants stuck in the rocks from the waist down.<br \/>\nWe proceed in the wood walking until the castle of Villa and finally we reach the reclaimed riverbed of Pian del Lago. As the ancient pilgrims, we will enter in Siena through Porta Camollia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our suggestion:<\/strong> go biking on the <a title=\"cycling lane\" href=\"http:\/\/www.piste-ciclabili.com\/comune-poggibonsi\" target=\"_blank\">cycling lane <\/a>on the layout of the old railway. It links Poggibonsi and Colle Val d&#8217;Elsa. If you are looking for\u00a0an\u00a0<strong>eco-friendly<\/strong> stay in<strong>\u00a0Siena<\/strong>\u00a0with an amazing views on the city roofs, try the eco\u00a0<a title=\"Bed &amp; breakfast eco Paradiso n.4, Siena, Tuscany\" href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/siena\/bed-breakfast\/b-b-paradiso-n-4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>B&amp;B Paradiso n. 4<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3. Picture by Martin Hapl via Flickr\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>This challenging and wonderful leg will lead us in the heart of the natural park of the Val d&#8217;Orcia.<br \/>\nGone out from Siena, we pass across the Crete Senesi and arrive in Murlo, famous for the Etruscan museum. From there we continue until Buonconvento, where a strong rise to Montalcino is waiting for us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our suggestion:<\/strong> visit the abbey of Sant&#8217;Antimo, a really peaceful place, known internationally for the concert of Gregorian chant. It&#8217;s a few kilometres from Montalcino and it&#8217;s worth a detour!<\/p>\n<h3>4. \u201cIl canto della terra verso il cielo\u201d (the earth singing towards the sky)<br \/>\nMontalcino \u2013 Radicofani (about 43 km)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_5469\" class=\"thumbnail alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/5.radicofani-aurello-candido.jpg\"><img class=\"wp-image-5469 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/5.radicofani-aurello-candido.jpg\" alt=\"A hill landscape of Tuscany, where woods and fields alternate. It&#8217;s difficult not agree with him when we cross these lands dried by the sun, coloured by grapevines and cypresses.<br \/>\nIn the first 13 km, we ride through the SP14 and the SR2 towards San Quirico D&#8217;Orcia, where we will join the via Francigena. Out of the village, a rise starts and leads us to Bagno Vignoni. On the background there are the massif of the Monte Amiata and the citadel of Radicofani, still far. We proceed without meeting particular difficulties until Ricorso, where the last strong stretch lead us to our destination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our suggestion<\/strong>:<a title=\"wine of Montepulciano\" href=\"http:\/\/www.belvederecolonna.it\/azienda.it.php\" target=\"_blank\"> taste\u00a0the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano<\/a>\u00a0(a few kilometres from Montalcino) is really unmissable, all the more biological!<\/p>\n<h3>5. Picture by Mark Notari via Flickr<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Our day starts in the best way: a beautiful stretch downhill along the way on the ancient layour of via Cassia, surrounded by hills. In Ponte Rigo we go on to Proceno, on a calm route. An other short slope precedes the rise to Acquapendente. There is possible to visit the<a title=\"Santo Sepolcro\" href=\"http:\/\/www.francigenalazio.it\/it\/resource\/poi\/acquapendente-chiesa-del-santo-sepolcro\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Church of Santo Sepolcro<\/a>.<br \/>\nAgain on the saddle, after some kilometres we start to glimpse the lake of Bolsena. From San Lorenzo Nuovo a dirt track goes down in an ancient crater and leads us to Bolsena through meadows and olive tree groves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our suggestion:<\/strong> refresh yourself in the lake of Bolsena! Uncontaminated and suitable for swimming, it&#8217;s the biggest volcanic lake in Europe.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6.
