It receives this name because it comes from the Latin &#8221;\u00a0<em>medi terraneum<\/em>\u00a0&#8221; which means &#8221;\u00a0<em><strong>sea\u00a0in the middle of the land<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0&#8220;.\u00a0That is, it is surrounded by lands of high extension.\u00a0Through the <strong>Strait of Gibraltar<\/strong>, the Mediterranean Sea connects with the <strong>Atlantic Ocean<\/strong> and is characterized by its <strong>great biodiversity:<\/strong> it is home to between 4% and 18% of the world&#8217;s marine species and has a very high value both <strong>ecologically and economically.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Why are water resources so important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2018\/06\/world-oceans-day-plastic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seas and oceans<\/a><\/strong> is fundamental for<strong> life on Earth<\/strong>, as they provide most of the <strong>oxygen<\/strong> we breathe. Photo By Getty Signature Via Canva Pro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the economic and ecological importance of the\u00a0<strong>Mediterranean Sea<\/strong>, currently and for many years it has faced major problems of\u00a0<strong>anthropogenic<\/strong>\u00a0origin, that are caused by\u00a0<strong>human<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>activities<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Some of these activities are:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Overfishing&nbsp;<\/li><li>Destructive fishing techniques<\/li><li>Pollution<\/li><li>Overpopulation on the coasts<\/li><li>Mass tourism&nbsp;<\/li><li>Poor (or not) waste treatment&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Alarming figures <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>WWF Spain<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>&#8220;The Mediterranean accumulates only 1% of the world&#8217;s water and 7% of global microplastics&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe dumps\u00a0<strong>500,000 tons of microplastics into the sea and 130,000 tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2022\/04\/microplastics-causes-effects-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microplastics<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Europe<\/strong>&nbsp;(the 28 members of the EU + Norway and Switzerland)&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>is the third largest producer of plastics in the world after China and North America&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the&nbsp;<strong>plastics<\/strong>&nbsp;used in the countries are <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2019\/12\/no-to-plastic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for&nbsp;<strong>packaging<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Mediterranean Sea,\u00a0<strong>more than 134 species<\/strong>\u00a0(fish,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/plastic-bag-sea-turtles\/\">sea turtles<\/a><\/strong>, mammals, and birds) are threatened by the\u00a0<strong>ingestion of plastics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/say-no-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Sign indicating &quot;Say no to single-use plastics&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-51218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/say-no.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/say-no-536x302.jpg 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/say-no-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/say-no-570x320.jpg 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/say-no-344x194.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><figcaption><em>Say NO to single-use plastics. affects marine fauna<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/portal\/en\">European Parliament Research Service<\/a><\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;, the main people affected by their presence at sea are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Marine life<\/li><li>Economy<\/li><li>Human health<\/li><li>Climate<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2>The case of Sicily Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" geopolitical location<\/strong>, is rich in\u00a0<strong>culture and history<\/strong>, possesses\u00a0<strong>valuable natural resources, indescribable landscapes, and unique gastronomy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different cultures have left their traces on this island throughout time and this can be seen in its diverse <strong>architectural styles, markets, temples, handicrafts, gastronomy, and creative environment <\/strong>in general. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why thousands of tourists visit the island every year and are attracted by this great <strong>cultural diversity<\/strong> accompanied by <strong>unique landscapes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" amount of garbage present in its terrestrial and maritime space<\/strong>, mainly the\u00a0<strong>plastics that surround its coasts<\/strong>\u00a0and are visible throughout the Island.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic pollution&nbsp;<strong>affects the most remote places in the world<\/strong>&nbsp;and harms both natural environments and people&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the places most visited by&nbsp;<strong>tourists<\/strong>, as in the least frequented of&nbsp;<strong>Sicily, cigarette<\/strong>&nbsp;butts&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>plastics<\/strong>&nbsp;are concentrated in large quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the beaches, the mountains, and the streets of the cities are affected by the problem of plastic.&nbsp;<strong>The beaches look like garbage dumps and all that garbage ends up deposited in the sea.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are those who hold tourists responsible<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.es\/blog\/2023\/05\/turismo-sostenible-viajeros-pasan-huellas-quedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">,<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0but there is also a great responsibility on the part of various\u00a0<strong>social actors such as municipalities, companies, and part of the local population<\/strong>\u00a0in environmental contamination and the alarming amount of garbage that the island contains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the months of <strong>high season<\/strong>, tourist cities multiply their in large quantities their <strong>population<\/strong>, therefore it is necessary a commitment from them, as well as from institutions, companies and citizens to regulate the use of plastics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for alternatives to plastic products, control the separation of waste, prohibition of single-use plastics, correct recycling and reuse of plastics, and the daily cleaning of beaches and spaces in
