The town is located on the eastern end of the<strong> Gargano Promontory.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vieste is a renowned seaside town, also known for its crystal-clear waters. In fact, it won the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2022\/05\/italian-summer-blue-flags\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blue Flag<\/a>&#8216; award several times by the <strong>Foundation for Enviroment Education<\/strong> (a non-profit, non-governmental organisation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-21-870x490.png\" alt=\"Vieste \" class=\"wp-image-50145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-21.png 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-21-536x302.png 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-21-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-21-570x320.png 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-21-344x194.png 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><figcaption>Picture by Canva Pro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a town steeped in history with its medieval centre made up of small <strong>white houses<\/strong>, narrow streets and squares that open onto the sea and remind us that Vieste was once a <strong>fishing village<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What to visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My visit starts at the <strong>Ad Alt gate<\/strong>, which is one of the main entrances to the old city, and a few steps lead up to the <strong>Cathedral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img width=\"840\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-22.png\" alt=\"Cathedral of Vieste\" class=\"wp-image-50146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-22.png 840w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-22-536x313.png 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-22-768x448.png 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-22-344x201.png 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption>Picture by Canva Pro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 11th century <strong>Cathedral of Vieste<\/strong> is dedicated to St Mary of the Assumption. It has a three-nave interior with capitals with floral or animal figures. On the three huge wooden canvases you can admire St George and St Michael, the patron saint of the Gargano. On <strong>29 September<\/strong> each year, there is a special nocturnal pilgrimage that is very folkloric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to the church, you can see the imposing <strong>Baroque bell tower<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Near the cathedral, there is the <strong>Chianca Amara<\/strong> in memory of the sad massacre of over 5,000 in 1554 at the hands of the Turks who invaded the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Swabian Aragonese Castle<\/strong> is on the slope leading to the old city centre and <strong>Frederick II <\/strong>built in 1242 to defend the city. Although it is not accessible because it is a military centre, it is worth mentioning because of the splendid view of both the <strong>Pizzomunno rock<\/strong> and the <strong>Scialara beach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Pizzomunno rock and its legend <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"870\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-23-870x490.png\" alt=\"Pizzomunno rock in Vasti\" class=\"wp-image-50147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-23.png 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-23-536x302.png 536w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-23-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-23-570x320.png 570w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/03\/image-23-344x194.png 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><figcaption>Picture by Canva Pro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pizzomunno is a large white <strong>limestone rock<\/strong> protruding more than 25 metres from the Scialara beach, also known as &#8216;<strong>Roccia del Castello<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legend tells of Pizzomunno, a beautiful young <strong>fisherman<\/strong>, who fell in love with a young woman named Cristalda. The sirens later kidnapped her out of jealousy. The boy waited in vain for the woman to be freed by the sea creatures, but this never happened. So it was because of the <strong>waiting <\/strong>and the pain that she was <strong>petrified <\/strong>into the great rock that we can admire today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in memory of this love, there is also &#8216;the<strong> stairway of love<\/strong>&#8216;. The staircase starts from <strong>Corso Fazzini <\/strong>(City Hall area) and arrives in the city centre. People say that lovers who walk down it will remain so for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find the <strong>museum <\/strong>dedicated to <strong>seashells <\/strong>in Via Pola 8. It is a small but interesting museum that started in 1975 as a souvenir shop. It later became a museum thanks to the great passion of the owners who collected marine <strong>specimens <\/strong>from all over the world. In the old town, which is full of shops where <strong>local craftsmen<\/strong> carve stone. The local limestone is ideal for making beautiful jewellery adorned with precious stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also interesting are the wooden or clay miniatures such as the &#8216;<strong>trabucchi<\/strong>&#8216;, small models of old constructions that were used for fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to arrive and were to stay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>historic centre<\/strong>, like all the villages, is a restricted traffic zone. To avoid fines, it is advisable to park (there are charges) on <strong>Viale Marina d&#8217;Italia<\/strong> or <strong>Lungomare Vespucci<\/strong> or <strong>Piazzale Stadio<\/strong> and then walk around.
