It is named after the two rows of orange trees that surround it on three sides. From here we can see the <strong>Ducal Palace<\/strong>, while in the centre stands a large <strong>obelisk<\/strong>, surrounded by four sculptures of lions, whose mouths end in the fountain.<br>The square is an attractive <strong>meeting place<\/strong> for locals. In addition, the pedestrian street of the old town, bars, restaurants and shops begins here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>2. The building, also known as <strong><em>Palazzo Rosso<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>Palazzo della Prefettura<\/em><\/strong>, dates back to 1563 in perfect Renaissance style.<br>In the following centuries it took on a Baroque appearance, especially on the outside, while inside, after the entrance we find a courtyard with columns and stairs, at the end of which there are statues of <strong>Neptune <\/strong>riding the waves. It is named after the statue of <strong>Mercury <\/strong>that stands at its centre. It is a must-see monument, as it is so beautiful, lively and crowded, especially on Tuesday mornings with the <strong>town market<\/strong>.<br>In the background you can see a <strong>fountain<\/strong>, built in 1566, in fact the square was originally called <strong><em>Piazza Pozzo<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>4. The cathedral of Massa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/istockphoto-1382111021-612x612-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49821\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\"\/><figcaption>Facade of the Cathedral of Massa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t miss the city&#8217;s most remarkable church, the <strong><em>Duomo di Massa<\/em><\/strong> (its cathedral). It consists of six domes, spread over two floors separated by a balcony. At the top of each one is a painted <strong>fresco <\/strong>depicting religious scenes. It is worth a visit to the interior where we can admire several paintings dating back to the late 17th century, including the <strong><em>Immaculate Conception<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>All Saints<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Luigi Gazi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>5. Theater Guglielmi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/Massa-teatro_Guglielmi-768x490.jpg\" alt=\"Theater Guglielmi in Massa\" class=\"wp-image-49822\" width=\"870\"\/><figcaption>Teatro Guglielmi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is no coincidence that <strong><em>Piazza Teatro<\/em><\/strong> is home to <strong><em>Teatro Guglielmi<\/em><\/strong> (the theatre), a historic building constructed in the 19th century due to the need for a larger performance venue. It was designed by the famous Italian architect <strong>Vincenzo Micheli<\/strong>, in memory of <strong>Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi<\/strong>, Massa&#8217;s most famous musician.<br>The theatre is one of the most elegant buildings in the city and has a striking neoclassical fa\u00e7ade with a large portico supporting the external aisle. On the other hand, the interior is elliptical in style and structured in three tiers of boxes, above which is a large gallery. It has recently been restored and enriched with an extensive calendar of <strong>events <\/strong>that truly suits the tastes of every audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>6. The Church of <em>Madonna del Monte<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/677px-Chiesa_Madonna_Monte-677x490.jpg\" alt=\"The church of Madonna del Monte\" class=\"wp-image-49823\" width=\"870\"\/><figcaption>Picture by Luca Massa66<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church of <strong><em>Madonna del Monte <\/em><\/strong>was built at the foot of <strong><em>Monte di Pasta<\/em><\/strong> and it is one of the oldest buildings in Massa. Prince Alberico Cybo-Malaspina commisioned its construction to enrich Massa with monasteries and churches.<br>The building is very elegant and has this splendid <strong>fa\u00e7ade <\/strong>punctuated by pilasters and columns with Corinthian capitals supporting a tympanum. From here we can admire the Tuscan coast, with views stretching from<a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/beyond-cinque-terre-free-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Liguria<\/a> to Livorno. The fortress bears the name of the <strong>Malaspina <\/strong>family, which dominated Massa during the mid-15th century.<br>Under their dominion, the building underwent radical transformations. In fact, today the oldest wall structures have almost disappeared. It is also very fascinating to visit the interior of the residential building and the underground rooms, dug directly into the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>8. <em>Villa della Rinchiostra<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Villa Rinchiostra Massa Toscana\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xfh2_HpMvIs?start=1&#038;feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/ecobnb.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The picturesque <strong><em>Villa della Rinchiosta<\/em><\/strong> was built at the behest of Princess Teresa Pamphili, wife of Carlo II Cybo-Malaspina. Coming from a rich and sumptuous Roman family, she wanted to create a &#8216;<strong>rural<\/strong>&#8216; environment where she could live in the modest splendour of a small court.<br>The successive owners over the centuries enriched the villa and in particular the garden and park, only partially visible today. <strong><em>Villa la Rinchiostra<\/em><\/strong> is a magnificent three-storey building, somewhat reminiscent of the <strong><em>Ducal Palace<\/em><\/strong> in terms of certain architectural elements and the use of contrasting red and white.
