The winter solstice is here and that means that temperatures will drop dramatically for the next three months.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sunday 21st December, 11.03 pm<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is when the Sun will reach the highest point along its ecliptic journey in the sky.<br \/>\nAnd though we take it for granted, let\u2019s just remember the Sun isn\u2019t moving around the Earth, but rather it\u2019s the Earth that moves around the Sun.<br \/>\nAnd it keeps on moving!<br \/>\nBut the Earth isn\u2019t just moving around the Sun; it also spins around its own oblique axis .<br \/>\nIn the winter, the sun\u2019s rays don\u2019t touch the Earth directly and so can\u2019t warm the Earth as they do during the summer.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin: about these complicated movements around the Sun and the Earth\u2019s axis, the disappearing sunlight during the winter months must have been extremely shocking during ancient times: no light or sunrays meant, little food and continual cold weather.<br \/>\nPeople always used to <strong>celebrate the Solstice as the return of Light and Life<\/strong>.<br \/>\nNordic populations would celebrate the\u201dSol invictus\u201d: the undefeated sun which had won over the dark forces.<br \/>\nThe Romans had the \u201cSaturnalia\u201d: parties whose highlight were food, wine and candles.<br \/>\nEven the antique Egyptians honored Horus, whose name means \u201cthe one who is above\u201d and \u201cThe one who is far up there\u201d.<br \/>\nSince the dawn of time, the fading of light during certain months of the year and its eventual return were events to fear and to celebrate.<br \/>\nNowadays, we have more detailed information than centuries ago and yet we face the winter months with a sad smile and look forward to springtime and longer hours of sunlight.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4925\" class=\"thumbnail aligncenter\"><a
