{"id":4583,"date":"2014-11-17T18:27:27","date_gmt":"2014-11-17T17:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.italygreentravel.com\/?p=4583"},"modified":"2014-11-26T12:46:53","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T11:46:53","slug":"bridge-veja-lessinia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/bridge-veja-lessinia\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge of Veja: a mysterious karstic giant in Lessinia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the sourroundings of <strong>Verona<\/strong> area, inside the <strong>Regional Nature Park of Lessinia<\/strong>, it is possible to see a natural phenomenon unique in Europe: a window that opens toward the rocky wall that maybe inspired the &#8220;Sommo Poeta&#8221; and <strong>Andrea Mantegna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4686\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/Il-Ponte-di-Veja-Margherita-Meneghetti-small.jpg\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-4686\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/Il-Ponte-di-Veja-Margherita-Meneghetti-small-800x490.jpg\" alt=\"The Bridge of Veja, Lessinia\" width=\"800\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">The Bridge of Veja, ph. by Margherita Meneghetti<\/div><\/div>\n<p>From 1990 the highland of Lessinia has became <strong>Regional Natural Park<\/strong> and nowadays it extends approximately for 10 thousand hectares.<\/p>\n<p>Near Localit\u00e0 <strong>Giare of Sant&#8217;Anna d\u2019Alfaedo<\/strong>, to around 25 kilometers from Verona, at 600 meters of altitude, the suggestive vision of a one arch rocky bridge dominates for around 30 meters the landscape: it is the famous <strong>Bridge of Veja<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4687\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/Il-Ponte-di-Veja-foto-di-Margherita-Meneghetti-3.jpg\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-4687\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/Il-Ponte-di-Veja-foto-di-Margherita-Meneghetti-3-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"The bridge of Veja, Lessinia\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/Il-Ponte-di-Veja-foto-di-Margherita-Meneghetti-3-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/Il-Ponte-di-Veja-foto-di-Margherita-Meneghetti-3-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">The bridge of Veja, ph. by Margherita Meneghetti<\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Autumn<\/strong> is considered the ideal season to discover Lessinia; in fact, in this period it is possible to be pervaded by an explosion of characteristic colors: the yellow ochre of the leaves that slowly fall from the trees, the dark green of the musky rock and the rusty color of the wet woody trunks. The bridge tends to a <strong>rosy color<\/strong> because it is constituted by limestones and plates of Rosso Ammonitico Veronese.<\/p>\n<p>Under the arch of the bridge a brook flows, and forward, toward valley, it forms a fall. In the neighbourhood there are some <strong>caves<\/strong>; the biggest, named &#8220;A&#8221; or &#8220;of the Bear&#8221;, is long around 180 meters and it is closed by a gate. In these caves archaeologists found some important prehistoric evidences. These places are also destinations for speleologists. Different factors could have origined such a stone conformation (climatic elements or pressure of the water) and could have determined the erosion of the rock that finally took the characteristic shape of a bridge.<\/p>\n<p>In Italy, such as all around the world, we can find a lot of natural archs, especially in certain areas near to a stream or to the sea. We can see more of these natural artworks in the South of Italy and in the islands, for example the natural arch of Tavolara, or that of <strong>Capri island<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4689\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/L\u2019arco-naturale-dell\u2019isola-di-Capri-foto-di-Gigi-Oliviero-ifilmati.eu_.jpg\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-4689\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/L\u2019arco-naturale-dell\u2019isola-di-Capri-foto-di-Gigi-Oliviero-ifilmati.eu_-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Natural bridge in Capri island\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/L\u2019arco-naturale-dell\u2019isola-di-Capri-foto-di-Gigi-Oliviero-ifilmati.eu_-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/11\/L\u2019arco-naturale-dell\u2019isola-di-Capri-foto-di-Gigi-Oliviero-ifilmati.eu_-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">Natural bridge in Capri island, ph. by Gigi Oliviero, via ifilmati.eu<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Natural bridges or archs are also present in the climbing zones in the Northern part of Italy, as for example the Stevia arch in <strong>Val Gardena<\/strong> or the bridge of the Ogre in the locality of Ospedaletto, near <strong>Trento<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Bridge of Veja is special in comparison with other natural archs because in the past it was used as a transit zone by people who crossed the Vajo della Marciora; in fact it was also named &#8220;<strong>The Road<\/strong>&#8220;, or &#8220;Bridge of the Weg&#8221;, from the German Der Weg, that means the road.<\/p>\n<p>The local history researchers think that the natural process of formation of this bridge is almost a <strong>mystery<\/strong>, the same is for both the inhabitants of Lessinia and the tourists who every year visit the site: they usually remain marveled by the greatness of the bridge.
