The new Gallery<\/strong> inaugurated at the Museum of Science in Trento is dedicated to the goals of the\u00a0UN\u2019s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/a>, which consists of 17 sections, including gender equality, clean water, economic growth, responsible consumption, and many\u00a0more subjects.<\/p>\n The Gallery dedicated to sustainability considers different possible scenarios which could affect the Earth. Its aim\u00a0is to raise awareness<\/strong> of the problems that concern the planet, with the aim of\u00a0revising our daily habits for a healthier and cleaner world.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, this change cannot occur if only a small group of people implement these measures:\u00a0we need community and active cooperation from all of us; it has to be a culture change.<\/p>\n The Gallery on sustainability topics has been organized to minimize the expenditure of resources: the products that have been used are\u00a0recycled.<\/p>\n The exhibition highlights how numerous events are causing the world to suffer a crisis which is leading to unsustainability.<\/p>\n In recent years the population has increased dramatically, and this could lead to the scarcity of\u00a0available resources in nature. There are some renewable resources, yet the velocity with which humans are using them is overcoming the velocity with which the\u00a0environment is restocking them.<\/p>\n Another important function of the Earth is reabsorbing garbage but we are producing it\u00a0too quickly and the environment cannot metabolize it.<\/p>\n “Sustainable development<\/strong> is the development that meets the needs of the present without\u00a0compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. (Definition by the\u00a0Conference on Environment and Development)<\/p>\n Therefore, a sustainable society should manage the stock of resources responsibly not\u00a0only at an intragenerational level, within the same generation, but also at an\u00a0intergenerational level, considering the needs of the future generations: everyone should\u00a0have the same rights.<\/p>\n The temperature of the planet is increasing<\/strong><\/a>: this change seems slow but it\u2019s\u00a0faster than we might think and it\u2019s very dangerous.<\/p>\n Most scientists argue that global warming<\/strong> is caused in part by the combustion of carbon, oil, and\u00a0natural gas, by deforestation and fires. Greenhouse gasses are released when fossil fuels are\u00a0burnt. These travel more slowly and cause heat to stay on the planet, increasing its temperature.<\/p>\n Livestock farming too contributes to the phenomenon. Many places are indeed deforested and\u00a0reserved for this activity: yet this is not the only factor that causes damage to the Earth, we also\u00a0need to consider the high consumption of energy used for breeding.<\/p>\n All these issues could lead to dangerous<\/strong> environmental and social consequences<\/strong>, indeed they\u00a0could affect food production, cause extraordinary meteorological events and help spread\u00a0infective diseases.<\/p>\n Another important phenomenon is the loss of biodiversity. Scientists claim that in 25\u00a0years around 10% of all the species will be extinguished. According to the UN, 70% of fish stock is overexploited: only 10% of large size fish is left in the sea. Their scarcity is not only a threat\u00a0for the future of fish and of the workers in that field, but also it could drastically alter the\u00a0ecosystem<\/strong>, leading to unknown global consequences.<\/p>\n To achieve green growth we need everyone to play their role. It’s necessary to reduce inequality: it\u2019s inconceivable to propose a\u00a0sustainable development model to poorer countries as they wouldn\u2019t be able\u00a0to adapt and invest in eco-friendly services<\/strong>. Furthermore, richer countries use more products and\u00a0services and, consequently, they tend to pollute more.<\/p>\n Therefore, people in developed countries could modify some daily habits to contribute to\u00a0the planet\u2019s welfare<\/strong> by limiting meat consumption and turning lights and water off if not needed.<\/p>\n Companies should take a sustainable approach too. The depletion of resources could also\u00a0have negative effects on the economy, thus businesses should invest in eco-friendly services,\u00a0decrease the expenditure of resources and adjust to environmental legislation.<\/p>\n The gallery shows that people shouldn’t underestimate the issue of sustainability: we should act before it\u2019s too late. The\u00a0only way to achieve a real change to save the ecosystem is by cooperating.<\/p>\n People, society, and\u00a0organizations are part of a network<\/strong> with the aim of protecting the planet<\/strong><\/a>.
