The European Commissioner<\/strong> for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, recognized the prestigious title of European Green Capital<\/strong> during the award ceremony in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The European Commissioner chose Lisbon for its urban sustainability<\/strong>, thanks to better environmental<\/strong> management and careful urban planning. It is the first time a southern<\/strong> European capital received the award, which is usually given to northern European cities.<\/p>\n

Lisbon has made great strides to become a green city<\/strong> by consolidating its environmental<\/strong> and social<\/strong> sustainability strategy and, consequently, improving the quality of life of its citizens<\/strong>, demonstrating that environmental protection and economic growth<\/strong> can go hand in hand. The Portuguese capital has shown how to turn environmental challenges<\/strong> into opportunities<\/strong>. In recent years, Lisbon has shown itself to be a pioneer in sustainable land management through sustainable mobility, ecological innovation,<\/strong> and landscaping.<\/p>\n

Why did Lisbon get the award of European Green Capital 2020?<\/h2>\n

According to italiatravelworld.it<\/a>, the reasons why Lisbon won this title include a 50% reduction<\/strong> in CO2 emissions<\/strong> between 2002<\/strong> and 2014<\/strong>, a 23%<\/strong> reduction in energy consumption,<\/strong> and a 17%<\/strong> reduction in water<\/strong> consumption between 2007<\/strong> and 2013<\/strong>, sustainable infrastructures<\/strong> to reduce the risk of unpredictable climate events. And more, bike-sharing<\/strong> projects all the way to the suburbs, a cycle network<\/strong> of over 90 km, pedestrianization<\/strong> of large areas<\/strong> and an increase in green <\/strong>zones, electric<\/strong> public transport, and new parks<\/strong> with sustainability certification, using a holistic approach to urban planning<\/strong> that considers all aspects of the city, including water, mobility, waste, education, and employment.<\/p>\n

As far as public transport<\/strong> is concerned, since the management of Carris<\/strong> has returned to the municipality, the company has become greener. The fleet of 250 new buses works by natural gas (40% less polluting particles). 93.3%<\/strong> of the inhabitants live within 300 metres<\/strong> of a stop for efficient public transport, 39%<\/strong> of municipal cars are electric<\/strong>, 76%<\/strong> of people have green areas<\/strong> within 300 metres of their homes<\/strong>. Setting a benchmark for many other cities in Europe, Lisbon has also connected its green areas with the Vale de Alc\u00e2ntara<\/strong> green corridor, which links the city’s natural amenities, such as Monsanto<\/strong> Park and the Tejo<\/strong> River, with cycle paths and walkways, offering its citizens greater access to green areas and related activities.<\/p>\n

The city is also creating a new green space<\/strong>, allowing wildlife to thrive while respecting its biodiversity<\/strong>.
