It may sound unrealistic, but it is already happening in Sweden. Located in <strong>Stockholm<\/strong>, we find <strong>the world&#8217;s first Climate Store<\/strong>. To produce all the goods we find on supermarket shelves, we need <strong>land<\/strong>, <strong>water<\/strong>, <strong>energy<\/strong>, <strong>fertilizer<\/strong> inputs and so much more. It is a supermarket where foods cost as much as they pollute. It is actually more of a\u00a0<strong>concept store<\/strong>\u00a0than just a regular supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>Starting last October, in this supermarket, it was possible to go grocery shopping in a kind of <strong>unconventional<\/strong> way. And this is because the price of every food item is entirely based on its <strong>corresponding CO2 emissions<\/strong>. Accordingly, consumers are supposed to pay with a &#8220;<strong>climate currency<\/strong>\u201d, called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_warming_potential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CO2e<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The more <strong>carbon dioxide emissions<\/strong>, the higher the <strong>environmental impact<\/strong>&#8230;and as a consequence, the higher the <strong>price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Felix managed to make more <strong>visible<\/strong> and <strong>understandable<\/strong> the interrelation between the <strong>economic<\/strong> <strong>cost<\/strong> and the <strong>environmental<\/strong> <strong>cost<\/strong> of each food. And this experiment turned out successful. Why do we always want to save <strong>money<\/strong>, but we do not pay attention to <strong>environmental savings<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>In the world&#8217;s first Climate Store, each customer is granted a limited \u201c<strong>Climate Budget<\/strong>\u201d for the week in carbon dioxide equivalents, and they just can&#8217;t exceed it.<\/p>\n<p>This budget was calculated considering that in order to halve the environmental impact of each consumer, we must stay within a weekly \u201cbudget\u201d corresponding to <strong>18.9 kilograms of carbon dioxide<\/strong>. According to Swedish authorities, this is the maximum impact we can have to reach the goals of the <strong>Paris Agreements<\/strong> \u2013 namely <strong>halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever thought that the cost of food is <strong>environmental<\/strong>, before being <strong>economic<\/strong>? Just like you can browse <strong>allergens<\/strong>, <strong>ingredients<\/strong> and <strong>nutritional values<\/strong> of food, you can even see the exact carbon footprint of each item. Making this aspect as\u00a0<strong>visible<\/strong> and <strong>understandable\u00a0<\/strong>as the others translates into giving all these aspects equal weight. And it plays a key role in terms of health, safety and <strong>commitment<\/strong> for a brighter future.<\/p>\n<p>Felix thus becomes the symbol of not only more accessible and new sustainability but also of a renewed transparency. It is not just a matter of spreading greater awareness, but especially of making it accessible and visible to every single customer.<\/p>\n<h2>The Best Products? We should focus on the best deals not only for our money but for the environment too. We should go for \u201clow-cost\u201d items only if they also have a \u201clow environmental cost\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is why in the Climate Store the items with a corresponding low carbon footprint were provided with a special symbol. And it would be great to be guided in this journey by the most famous food brands.
