The main beaches in Vila Nova de Milfontes are Praia da Franquia<\/strong>\u00a0and Praia do Farol<\/strong>, which overlook the Mira river<\/strong>. The town is dominated by the ruins<\/strong> of a tenth-century Moorish castle<\/strong>, which sits at the top of a narrow and very steep cobbled hill. Aljezur is close to several spectacular beaches<\/strong> including Arrifana<\/strong>, Monte Cl\u00e9rigo,<\/strong> and Carrapateira<\/strong>, all of which form part of the stunningly beautiful Parque Natural <\/strong>do Sudoeste Alentejano<\/strong> e Costa Vicentina<\/strong>, a strip of coastline that is protected from development. Go to have dinner in Varzea Bistrot<\/strong>, it offers you amazing local fish<\/strong> and also vegetarian<\/strong> options. You can have local good shrimps<\/strong>, octopus<\/strong>, sea bass,<\/strong> and sea bream<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Surf in Bordeira and Carrapateira beaches and Explore the Islamic fishing village<\/h2>\n

Praia da Bordeira<\/strong> is a beach on the west coast<\/strong> of the Algarve<\/strong>, located in the Costa Vicentina<\/strong> natural park, nearby the villages of Carrapateira<\/strong> and Bordeira<\/strong>. The beach is very big, it stretches for 3 kilometres,<\/strong> and it is mainly popular with surfers<\/strong> and nature lovers<\/strong>. The length of the beach makes it great for long beach walks<\/strong>. The sand is nice<\/strong> and soft<\/strong>. You can enjoy the wild<\/strong> and rough waves<\/strong> of the Atlantic Ocean. Praia da Bordeira<\/strong> is backed by dunes<\/strong> and rugged limestone cliffs. Behind the beach, there is a forest of ancient pine trees<\/strong>. The best thing about this beach is that it is unspoiled<\/strong> and quiet<\/strong>. It is a perfect spot also to do kitesurfing<\/strong>. Praia da Bordeira is bordered by a river<\/strong>, which forms a lagoon<\/strong>. The small river is used by migrating birds<\/strong> as a stopover.<\/p>\n

Carrapateira<\/strong> is a surf-central village. The coast along here is wild<\/strong>, with copper-coloured and ash-grey cliffs covered in speckled yellow and green scrub, backing creamy, wide sands. Other activities that you can do here are Windsurfing<\/strong>, Kitesurfing<\/strong>, Bike Tours<\/strong>, Nature & Wildlife Tours<\/strong>, Hiking Trails,<\/strong> and Horse riding<\/strong>. The Islamic<\/strong> Fishing Village<\/strong> is an archaeological site close to Carrapateira<\/strong>. The site was excavated by a team of researchers from the University of Lisbon<\/strong> in 2001. Items found that date back to the 12th century. It served as a seasonal fishing village<\/strong> that also carried out some agriculture<\/strong> and animal<\/strong> rearing.<\/p>\n

6. Find your favourite handmade pottery in Cer\u00e2mica Para\u00edso shop in Vila do Bispo<\/h2>\n

The village of Bispo, Vila do Bispo<\/strong> in Portuguese, comes from the donation of the\u00a0Aldeia de Santa Maria do Cabo<\/strong>\u00a0by King\u00a0Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0to Bishop Fernando Coutinho<\/strong>. The area is perfect for bike tours<\/strong>. The more spectacular beaches<\/strong> near Vila do Bispo that you should visit are the following: Praia do Castelejo<\/strong>, Praia da Cordoama<\/strong>, Praia do Barranco<\/strong>, Praia do Zavial<\/strong>, Praia do Martinhal<\/strong>. Do not forget to pass by Cer\u00e2mica Para\u00edso shop<\/strong>. It is a wonderful shop that sells Ceramic<\/strong> pottery handmade<\/strong> in Portugal. There you can get some nice pottery to bring home to have a nice local<\/strong> memory. You can find all kinds of colourful<\/strong> pottery, find your favourite<\/strong> one!<\/p>\n

7. Have a walk in Praia do Mirou\u00e7o and Praia da Pena Furada<\/h2>\n

Praia do Mirou\u00e7o<\/strong> is an oceanic beach<\/strong> located near the municipality of Vila do Bispo<\/strong>. It presents an extensive sandy<\/strong> beach<\/strong>, whose area diminishes a lot during high tide. When you go there you should pay attention to the tide periods<\/strong>. The huge cliffs cover this small, hidden paradise<\/strong>. The best way to access the beach is by walking<\/strong>. When you get to the beach, you should go down a pretty difficult track on the cliff<\/strong>. We recommend going there for those who have some experience of climbing<\/strong>. Praia da Pena Furada<\/strong> is a small strip of sand sitting in a small inlet in the cliffs, with rock formations populating the area all around. At lower tides<\/strong>, some more pockets of sand<\/strong> become accessible. A good place to spend time in company with the wilderness<\/strong> of nature around, while enjoying the strong water energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

8. Discover the traces of Pangea in Praia do Telheiro<\/h2>\n

Praia do Telheiro<\/strong> is one of the most significant keys useful to unlock the geologic riddles<\/strong> surrounding Iberia<\/strong>\u2019s distant past<\/strong>. Telheiro is a site of special geologic<\/strong> significance and interest<\/strong>. There are birds<\/strong> and wild nature<\/strong> around. It is also a great surfing spot<\/strong>. There, surrounded by a primordial and forsaken landscape, you will find one of the largest<\/strong> and clearest coastal unconformities<\/strong> in Western Europe<\/strong>. You can see one of the few spots in the world where you can notice the traces of Pangea<\/strong>. Make sure to go there with low tide,<\/strong> and you will see this impressive natural show<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

9. Do a Bike Tour along Cabo de S\u00e3o Vincente<\/h2>\n

Cabo de S\u00e3o Vicente<\/strong> is an untamed headland overlooking the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong> that has enchanted sailors<\/strong> and travellers from all over the world for centuries. It is the most south-western<\/strong> point of the Algarve<\/strong>. It has always been the last glimpse of land that sailors in southern Portugal<\/strong> saw before going into open waters<\/strong>. Its name comes from a Spanish priest<\/strong> who had his remains on these cliffs<\/strong>. At the furthest point of the Cape<\/strong>, there is a lighthouse<\/strong>. During the age of Queen Mary II<\/strong> in 1846,<\/strong> some workers built it.<\/p>\n

The sunset<\/strong> is the best time to go there, you can see the sun<\/strong> that hides behind the waters<\/strong> of the ocean<\/strong>. The cliffs around the cape reach a height of 75 metres<\/strong>, and you can enjoy a beautiful panorama<\/strong>. Around the cape, there is a high concentration of birds<\/strong>, which nest among the cliffs<\/strong>. Some of these species are rare, making Cabo de S\u00e3o Vicente<\/strong> an ideal place for birdwatchers<\/strong><\/a>. About one kilometre before reaching the lighthouse<\/strong>, you pass by the Fortaleza do Beliche<\/strong>, built in 1632.<\/strong> You can go down a small path towards the sea. It is an ideal place to stop<\/strong> and enjoy a picnic<\/strong> sheltered from the strong wind<\/strong> that blows constantly in the area. Also, it is a nice idea to do a bike tour<\/strong> in the area around.<\/p>\n

10. Go back in time to the Fortress of Sagres<\/h2>\n

The Fortress of Sagres<\/strong> had the mission to protect the town from raiders from North Africa<\/strong>. Henry the Navigator built it, and from here he devised his 15th-century<\/strong>\u00a0expeditions to the uncharted seas around the western side of Africa<\/strong>, \u201cthe Age of Discoveries\u201d.<\/p>\n

Henry spent much of his time here before setting off on his voyages, upon which he was the first European to discover the Azores<\/a> <\/strong>and large parts of the African coastline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There are great panoramic views<\/strong> over the Ocean. The walls and the entrance are impressive<\/strong>. Here, you can close your eyes<\/strong>, feel the history vibes,<\/strong> and go back in time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
