Photo via Canva<\/div><\/div>\n<p>A great combination of History and Tradition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Casa do Mercado Lisboa<\/strong> is a charming traditional Lisbon townhouse with <strong>9 rooms<\/strong> and suites located in the <strong>center of Lisbon<\/strong> with great access to public transports. The wooden flooring is a great combination with the <strong>colorful guestrooms<\/strong> where comfort will make you <strong>feel at home<\/strong>. In this interview, Francisco told us the history of this <strong>cozy place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Hi Francisco, can you tell us something about yourself?<\/h3>\n<p>My name is Francisco Franco Afonso, I\u2019m <strong>Portuguese<\/strong>, born and raised in <strong>Lisbon<\/strong>, and my academic background includes studies in <strong>hospitality<\/strong>. I have a degree in <strong>hotel administration<\/strong> from Estoril school of Hotel management. Before that, I obtained a professional degree in the <strong>hotel business<\/strong> at the service level, and then I also have more recent <strong>certifications in wine tasting<\/strong>. After that, I attended a general management program at Cornell University in the United States. Finally, I also obtained a post-graduate degree in <strong>luxury marketing<\/strong> at Catolica University in Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p>Concerning my professional experience, after my graduation in 1992, I\u2019ve always worked and studied at the same time. I\u2019ve worked in different\u00a0<strong>restaurants<\/strong> and <strong>hospitality firms<\/strong> in <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, <strong>Mozambique,<\/strong> and the <strong>United States<\/strong>\u00a0in city centers, mountain locations, islands in very <strong>different environments<\/strong>.\u00a0I started to work in hospitality in 1992, so now it\u2019s been <strong>28 years<\/strong>.\u00a0So, this is a bit of an overview of myself and my businesses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37239\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><img class=\"wp-image-37239 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/11\/Schermata-2020-11-20-alle-12.18.38-e1606917893461.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"700\" \/><div class=\"caption\">Casa do Mercado Lisboa<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>What about Casa do Mercado Lisboa?<\/h3>\n<p>More recently, about <strong>5 years ago<\/strong>, I started this company with some friends who have German origins. We started this company that offers a more <strong>casual type of stay<\/strong>, at the same time <strong>authentic<\/strong> and <strong>different<\/strong>. Our intention is to provide an authentic <strong>Portuguese experience<\/strong>; the guest house is made mainly for the foreign traveller to <strong>feel the atmosphere<\/strong> of Lisbon and <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Portugal<\/strong><\/a> in their rooms.<\/p>\n<p>We opened our first guest house in Lisbon \u201cCasa do Mercado Lisboa\u201d with a reception area close to Mercado da Ribeira. The <strong>theme of the house<\/strong> is <strong>healthy products<\/strong>, namely <strong>healthy organic quality drinks<\/strong> and <strong>food<\/strong>. Later on, we opened a historic house in<strong> Sintra<\/strong>, where we have the name of guest\u2019s rooms decorated with different <strong>kings <\/strong>and <strong>queens <\/strong>of<strong> Portugal<\/strong>, in honor of Sintra Palace.<\/p>\n<p>We opened then, \u201cCasa do Vinho Guesthouse\u201d dedicated to the wine of Portugal and the names of guest\u2019s rooms are dedicated to different <strong>winemaking regions<\/strong>. There\u2019s a restaurant on the ground level focused on <strong>Portuguese food<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, we opened another guest house in the historic center of Sintra close to the National Palace. We are renting it on a monthly basis. I deeply believe in <strong>humans relations<\/strong>. The second reason is that I\u2019m good at working in the hospitality field and I could make a living out of it. Thirdly, because it&#8217;s a very <strong>diversified activity<\/strong> and I like different things every day. This <strong>flexibility<\/strong> works well with <strong>myself<\/strong> and my <strong>personality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37245\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><img class=\"wp-image-37245 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/11\/4-e1606917908398.png\" alt=\"Casa do Mercado Lisboa\" width=\"870\" height=\"702\" \/><div class=\"caption\">Casa do Mercado Lisboa<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>Which characteristics does your accommodation have regarding sustainability and which are the activities that you offer?<\/h3>\n<p>First of all, we aim to buy and invest in <strong>historic houses<\/strong> that need to be <strong>renovated<\/strong>, so we try to <strong>protect the historic architecture<\/strong> of these buildings as much as possible. We use\u00a0<strong>local materials<\/strong> and <strong>companies<\/strong>. We opt for <strong>sustainable management\u00a0<\/strong>to provide\u00a0<strong>authentic Portuguese hospitality<\/strong>, as we have as much as possible <strong>local staff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The attempt to involve only <strong>Portuguese stakeholders<\/strong> and suppliers is part of our values.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of food and beverage, we offer<strong> local products<\/strong> as much as possible. We buy <strong>fresh bioproducts<\/strong>; we do not have microwaves. Our rule is <strong>low stock, fresh,<\/strong> and <strong>local food<\/strong>. A local Portuguese company supplies us with the <strong>linen<\/strong>. We use a <strong>local laundry<\/strong>, as we do not have our own. In terms of energy, we <strong>don&#8217;t have gas<\/strong>. We use <strong>as little electricity as possible<\/strong> and we use <strong>water <\/strong>very<strong> efficiently<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal is to <strong>control consumption<\/strong> as much as possible. Also, we have <strong>isolated<\/strong> the <strong>rooms<\/strong> to <strong>reduce the loss of heat<\/strong>. We have an efficient <strong>heating system<\/strong> for <strong>each room<\/strong>, so we don&#8217;t have to heat the whole house.<\/p>\n<p>Also, in terms of<strong> processes<\/strong>, in Casa do Mercado Lisboa we attempt to be <strong>as simple as possible<\/strong>, for example for the administrative procedures for checking-in and checking-out. We <strong>don\u2019t have <\/strong>an<strong> administrative office<\/strong>; we\u00a0<strong>reduce all the consumptions<\/strong> and costs and we prefer to <strong>invest money on the operations<\/strong> side for the guests. <strong>Everything is online<\/strong>, we <strong>print as little as possible<\/strong>, we have <strong>only brochures<\/strong> and <strong>business cards<\/strong>, but nothing more than that.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46348\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><img class=\"wp-image-46348 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/12\/Pictures-Blog-Articles-870X490-76-536x302.png\" alt=\"Lisbon. Photo via Canva<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>How did you learn these sustainable practices that you&#8217;re offering?<\/h3>\n<p>First of all, from my<strong> family<\/strong> at home, I come from a <strong>traditional Portuguese family<\/strong> and what we do is trying to <strong>reuse<\/strong> everything, from vegetables to paper. At home I prefer to be efficient as much as possible, <strong>reusing<\/strong>, <strong>renovating<\/strong>, <strong>reducing,<\/strong> and <strong>recycling<\/strong> everything.<\/p>\n<h3>What does sustainability mean for you?<\/h3>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s a <strong>way of life<\/strong>, it\u2019s a <strong>philosophy<\/strong>, it\u2019s the way I want to be in this world. So basically, it&#8217;s not just part of my business, but it relates to the way of being and acting. Also, it means to be connected with <strong>ecological values<\/strong>, to <strong>respect the heritage<\/strong> and <strong>patrimony<\/strong> of a country, not only the <strong>historical<\/strong> and <strong>architectural<\/strong>, but also the <strong>natural<\/strong>. It\u2019s a huge inspiration for me.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the general concept regards to be <strong>self-efficient as possible<\/strong>, with <strong>minimum negative impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37312\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><img class=\"wp-image-37312 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/11\/Schermata-2020-11-20-alle-22.01.18-e1606917980786.png\" alt=\"Wine tasting\" width=\"870\" height=\"690\" \/><div class=\"caption\">Wine tasting<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>Which are for you the central themes and the main topics of environmental sustainability and social sustainability?<\/h3>\n<p>I like to keep things <strong>simple,<\/strong> if it\u2019s too complicated it still doesn\u2019t work. The key points are, first of all, to <strong>reduce<\/strong>, <strong>reuse<\/strong> and <strong>recycle<\/strong>, to prefer <strong>proximity,<\/strong> and to <strong>employ local people<\/strong> as much as geographically close to the place. Managing <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/renewable-sources-clean-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>energy<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>resources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to have this in mind and to <strong>promote to our guests<\/strong> the way we work and how we work, the communication is fundamental. The <strong>dignity<\/strong> of humans is the basis for human capital.<\/p>\n<h3>What does sustainable tourism mean for you?<\/h3>\n<p>I think it concerns the <strong>capacity<\/strong> of a <strong>destination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>What does sustainable accommodation represent to you?<\/h3>\n<p>I would say it means to start with something <strong>small<\/strong> and <strong>beautiful<\/strong>. I avoid as much as possible international brands, hotels, and resorts. I believe in a small family business that also provides this <strong>authentic<\/strong> type of reality. They show the<strong> soul<\/strong> of the place.<\/p>\n<h3>Which is the typical traveller who stays at your place?
