This vast <strong>plateau<\/strong> is famous for the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/flowering-castelluccio-di-norcia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Fiorita<\/strong><\/a>: a blooming event taking place between late <strong>May<\/strong> and early <strong>July<\/strong>. It was planted in <strong>1961<\/strong>, on the hundredth anniversary of the <strong>unification of Italy<\/strong> and during the <strong>Festa della Montagna<\/strong> (mountain festival), arranged by the then Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies Mariano Rumor. Here you will find the remarkable <strong>Eremo di San Leonardo al Volubro<\/strong>, an ancient <strong>monastery<\/strong> built in the heart of the gorges and popular destination for pilgrims. The lake\u2019s water is well-known for its <strong>clearness<\/strong>, reflecting the <strong>summits<\/strong> of the surrounding mountains. Legend has it that the corpse of <strong>Pontius Pilate<\/strong> was dragged from Rome on a cart pulled by two raging bulls and thrown into the water.<\/p>\n<h2>Wildlife in Sibillini<\/h2>\n<p>Many species of wild animals inhabit the Park: Mediterranean mammals, such as the <strong>red fox<\/strong>, the<strong> Italian wolf<\/strong>, the <strong>wild boar<\/strong> and the <strong>European roe deer<\/strong>. Among the aquatic animals, in addition to the <strong>Mediterranean trout<\/strong> and the <strong>European freshwater crayfish<\/strong>, the incredibly rare <strong>Apennine yellow-bellied toad<\/strong> can be observed. Through <strong>interactive devices<\/strong>, you will look closely to different phases of the butterfly\u2019s life, such as egg-laying, in a <strong>fun<\/strong> way. Indeed, about <strong>1,800<\/strong> different <strong>species<\/strong> naturally grow here, each of them adjusted to its surrounding environment. Up to 3,000 feet, you will often see <strong>downy oaks<\/strong>, <strong>beeches<\/strong> and <strong>European hop-hornbeams<\/strong>. Above 3,000 feet, rarer plant species can be spotted, such as <strong>edelweiss<\/strong>, <strong>white genepi<\/strong> or <strong>viola eugeniae<\/strong>. Castelluccio\u2019s <strong>lentils<\/strong> perfectly symbolise the tight <strong>bond<\/strong> that this rich area has always had <strong>with farming<\/strong>. Among cheeses, the main type is the savoury <strong>pecorino<\/strong>, but you will also taste delicious <strong>fresh<\/strong> and <strong>aged<\/strong> <strong>ricottas<\/strong>.
