Every day, millions of people travel for business or fun. Have you ever wondered how much this impacts on the environment<\/strong> and\u00a0natural resources<\/strong>? What is our contribution to global warming<\/a>\u00a0when we are on holiday?<\/p>\n

How much does your holiday pollute?<\/h2>\n

\u201cConsumption and Environment 2012\u201d is the European Union\u2019s document about European general consumption and its consequences on the environment. According to it, tourism is the fourth cause of environmental pollution<\/strong> and CO2<\/strong> production, just after consumptions for feed, living and transports.<\/p>\n

Transports<\/strong> are the primary responsible<\/strong> for the tourism impact on the environment, especially planes<\/strong> and cars that influence 75%<\/strong> of the CO2<\/strong> emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Accommodations<\/strong> have the second<\/strong> main role in it. They are responsible for almost 21% of the CO2 emissions<\/strong> related to the entire touristic sector. This data is not surprising at all because a\u00a0hotel<\/strong> wastes almost 21Kw of energy<\/strong> and 645 litres of water<\/strong> for each guest every day.<\/p>\n

CO2 emissions<\/strong> related to touristic activities have been growing hugely over the past fifty years and they will continue to grow soon. Conforming to some researches, there will be an increase in the\u00a0number of journeys<\/strong> (increasing around\u00a057%<\/strong>) and on distance travelled around 122%<\/strong> in the next twenty years<\/strong>. If some appropriate mitigation measures are not implemented soon, CO2 emissions<\/strong> will duplicate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Not all the holidays are the same<\/h2>\n

Even if we have good intentions of \u201cGreen Living\u201d, sometimes we end up burning fuel<\/strong> and staying in accommodation that has a huge impact on ecological footprint<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Other times, we go on holiday in direct contact with nature. We stay in accommodations<\/strong> with low environmental impact<\/a>, exploring the surroundings on horseback or by bike.<\/p>\n

This graph clearly shows how the touristic impact on the environment can vary depending on the kinds of holidays we choose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If the destination of your holiday is overseas or it is a cruise<\/strong><\/a> in the Mediterranean, CO2 emissions<\/strong> (measured per person and per day) are enormously greater<\/strong> compared to a \u201cstaycation<\/a><\/strong>\u201d, a holiday near your home<\/strong>, aimed to discover the local territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
