The administrative center of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region is mostly known for\u00a0its fascinating squares and architecture, and for\u00a0 the\u00a0Bora<\/strong><\/a>, the typical cold wind that tests citizens and tourists in winter. But the region\u2019s most important harbor hides something more. Trieste<\/strong> is \u201cthe city of coffee<\/strong>\u201d: it\u2019s not just a drink, but a piece of the city\u2019s soul, seen the\u00a0impressive amount of caf\u00e9s\u00a0that the citizens of Trieste\u00a0built in honor of these beans.<\/p>\n

During the years, Trieste\u2019s people made up their own language<\/strong> to describe every kinds of coffee they can have at a bar. Not even other Italians can understand them! For example, the espresso is called \u201cnero<\/em>\u201d and the coffee with milk, \u201cmacchiato<\/em>\u201d in the other parts of Italy, here is called \u201ccapo<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The caf\u00e9s of Trieste<\/strong> played an important role in the circulation of culture<\/strong> and critical thinking in the old Hapsburg city. For many years, Trieste\u2019s brightest minds decided to meet in the caf\u00e9s spread over the old city\u2019s streets rather than the middle-class homes. These are the city\u2019s 5 most famous historical caf\u00e9s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1. Caff\u00e8 Tommaseo<\/h2>\n

Trieste\u2019s most ancient caf\u00e9<\/strong> was built in 1825. Founded by Tommaso Marcato, from Padua, was renamed after the Dalmatian patriot Tommaseo<\/strong>, after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1918. From Stendhal to Saba and Svevo, the caf\u00e9 was and still is one of the liveliest cultural meeting point<\/strong> for many national and international intellectuals. Today it has the recognition of being one of Italy\u2019s historical places and it widened the range of its products: it added the Bischoff wine-house\u2019s trademark, one of Trieste\u2019s historical places.<\/p>\n

2. Caff\u00e8 Torinese<\/h2>\n

Opened in 1915, the rooms of the caf\u00e9 were finely decorated by Debelli<\/strong>, an artist who had already decorated the interior of two transatlantic ships at the begging of the century. Included in the list of Italy\u2019s historical places, it received the plaque that certifies the authenticity of the interior furniture<\/strong>. Even though it was renovated in 2009, the caf\u00e9 still preserves the original furniture, especially the valuable Art Nouveau style counter. The last management change gave to the caf\u00e9 \u201cTorinese\u201d<\/strong><\/a> a younger atmosphere, respecting its history.<\/p>\n

3. Pasticceria Pirona<\/h2>\n

The bakery \u201cPirona\u201d<\/strong> started its activity at the beginning of last century, in an Art Nouveau style place that still preserves the original furniture and atmosphere. Since 1991, it is enlisted as one of Italy\u2019s Historical Places<\/strong>. Thanks to its delicacies, it became almost immediately a reference point for many intellectuals and writers<\/strong> who lived and loved Trieste: among others, James Joyce, who lived close to the bakery, Umberto Saba and Italo Svevo.<\/p>\n

4. Caff\u00e8 Stella Polare<\/h2>\n

Since its opening in 1865, this caf\u00e9 has preserved a look similar to the Viennese caf\u00e9s<\/strong>, characterized by large mirrors and decorated with plasters and stuccos. The mirrors<\/strong> of the caf\u00e9\u2019s small room are still the original ones. The caf\u00e9 \u201cStella Polare\u201d<\/strong> well represented, during the years, the cosmopolitan<\/strong> atmosphere of a port city such as Trieste. Appreciated by the German community, visited by many international and national intellectuals such as Saba, during WWII it became an Anglo-American ballroom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Caff\u00e8 San Marco<\/h2>\n

The story of this stunning caf\u00e9 was quite troubled. Founded in 1914, the Ancient Caf\u00e9 \u201cSan Marco\u201d<\/strong><\/a> became immediately the meeting point for young irredentists<\/strong> (Italian patriots who wanted to be independent from the Austro-Hungarian Empire). The following year, some Austro-Hungarian soldiers devastated<\/strong> the caf\u00e9 and imposed its closure. Luckily, the valuable furniture was carefully renovated thanks to the General Associations<\/strong>\u2019 work, which, after WWII ensured its reopening. Today, the caf\u00e9 lives again as a bar, a restaurant and a bookshop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
