But how did this city end up being the World&#8217;s cycling capital? His relationship with cyclists hasn&#8217;t always been happy like today&#8230;.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the early 50s, Amsterdam was one of the most\u00a0congested cities in Europe with a high traffic related death rate. Now it\u2019s considered the<strong> World\u2019s Cycling Capital<\/strong>. That also permits to decrease the air pollution: we already know the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/air-pollution-damages-intelligence\/\">it damages our intelligence<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the official city\u2019s website says, <strong>cyclists have already outnumbered cars by 4 times<\/strong>, reaching the impressive number of 1 million of bicycles in the city, with a population of 800\u2019000. <strong>The relationship of the Netherlands with cyclists have surely old roots<\/strong>. Car\u2019s prices became affordable for the middle classes and vehicles started invadingthe city\u2019s streets. By then, with the idea of the car as the transport of the future, it seemed quite necessary to give to the vehicles the priority to travel throughout the city. Those &#8216;quiet&#8217; weekends when <strong>children could play in the streets<\/strong>, no rumbles, no car horns just people fully enjoying the city by foot. To get cyclist back on the streets it was necessary to build lots of kilometres of cycling paths. Hague and Tilburg were the first 2 cities which experimented an urban renovation with the construction of a wide network of cycling paths. They obtained a great success because <strong>the number of cyclists grew fast<\/strong> and soon after much more Dutch cities followed the example, including Amsterdam. They\u2019re now taking inspiration from Vision Zero, a Swedish project that aims to <strong>reduce the possibility of accidents to zero<\/strong>.
